People fixate on the fact it is about the Japanese in this particular study, which was just focused on the Japanese. But in the articles it says
It's a global trend in high-income countries. I would say that at least part of this is the easy access to porn. Not to mention the intentional upending of social norms in most of these countries. Lots of other things were discussed in this thread; it is probably a combination of many things.

I have a Japanese friend who lives just outside Tokyo. He owns a business now but tells me stories of when he was a worker bee at a big corporation.
You had to get to work in the morning before your boss. And you couldn’t leave until he did. He told me stories of being in the office until midnight. The trains were done for the night so he would take a taxi home and pick up McDonalds on the way. The taxi would cost most of his daily wages. He would sleep two or three hours and turn around and head back in.
If the boss decided to take the office out for a drink or five (at least once a week) you had to go. If you didn’t, you basically became unpromotable and a pariah.
He’s not one to exaggerate so I believe every word. They call these guys Salarymen.
