Is it time to abolish the postal service?

Besides those who work there does anyone have a positive take or experience with them? They are so unionized they can’t get fired. A private entity could do their job more efficiently and probably for 1/4 of the cost…

I’ve lived in my home at this zip for over 4 years and my mail lady is closer to clock work than anything else I can think of on the top of my head. I send out packages a couple times a week and receive several a week and can only remember one package that was a couple days delayed

No because I just mailed something via certified mail and based on their recent delivery timeframes I'm not certain it will be delivered prior to any proposed legislation passing both houses of Congress and being signed by POTUS.

I think it could definitely be downsized. There is no need for daily mail service to residential homes. That was necessary when it was the primary mode of communication. Maybe twice a week would be sufficient.

someone here posted that the huge expense of the post office comes not from the operation itself, but from pensions

That is highly unlikely, especially if they deliver to every address in the US.
I have partial ownership in an inherited company, and we have used the USPS for small parts shipping for the last 25+ years, and they have always been significantly cheaper than UPS or FedEx, with very similar or lower per-1,000 issues. This has actually changed recently, where FedEx is sometimes cheaper but slower overall. Many small and medium-sized businesses rely on USPS.

The USPS can't do that, and no profit company would deliver to everyone.

Right
People have no idea how many rural communities and elderly people would be immediately and drastically affected by dissolving USPS
It’s constitutionally protected so it would take a unified congress to dissolve it, and there aren’t enough lame duck morons in that bunch to risk pissing off their constituents and that union.

I think private equity has a long history of greatly improving a product for a bettee price.

The first thing a private company would do is cut off delivery to probably 80% of rural America because there is no profit in it, nor a way to do anything but lose money on it.
Some things should not be governed by profit margins, sorry

I don't choose to send many parcels with them, I typically use UPS ground but UPS has screwed me on many occasions also. With that said priority mail can be a great deal for some size packages and is much more reliable than standard mail service.
But as far as letters go, it's tough to beat the USPS rates.
Are you going to drive to Montana and deliver a letter for $0.82?
International mail still seems to rely heavily on USPS as the final delivery carrier also.
They are as bloated and inefficient as any civil service sector, but they do serve a purpose and should be kept around.

Pretty much sums it up.
We could do a trial run where you pay based on your address. I'm sure no one would be upset when rural communities are paying 5-10x the rates of big, dense cities.

exactly. it's a talking point made to fool dumb people. USPS is an integral service, serving every citizen.

The post office is actually one of those government entities that I’ve never had a bad experience with. I read all these horror stories online and it all sounds like made up slop conspiracies.

The USPS is an amazing creation that serves the American people in numerous and unappreciated ways. While it has its problems, the USPS delivered every single one of my 280 Christmas cards last year on time. The cost was just 78 cents, an incredible bargain.
