Is it reasonable to ask neighbors to share the costs for a new fence?

Long story short, wooden fence surrounding my backyard is reaching the end of its lifespan (warped, partially broken and weak boards) and it's about time to replace it. However, while the fence surrounds my entire back yard, parts of it are also shared by my neighbor to the north and neighbor to the east. Thus, is it poor etiquette to ask my neighbors to chip in for the costs even though they probably have no desire of their own to replace (part of) their fence at this time? As a bit of backstory, I have a good, though not close, relationship with one neighbor and the other just moved in a few months back (though he seems like a good guy in my limited conversations with him).
I was thinking something along the lines of me paying 1/2 the cost or more and asking the neighbors to split the other 1/2 (1/4 the total per person). There are essentially three sides to the fence. I share two of the three sides with my neighbors.
Thoughts?

Whoever the boards face pays.

Do a good neighbor fence. Each side gets boards, each side pays.

I had a feud with a next door neighbor over a fence that lasted almost 2 years. Good luck, I hope your neighbors are more reasonable than mine were. They did end up paying someone to build the fence all on their own when I originally asked them to split the cost of wood and I would build it

Don't. That opens the door for them to have a "say" in all sorts of matters. Pay for it yourself.

It's not unreasonable at all. I did the same thing a couple of years back and 2/3 neighbors agreed. The one that didn't agree ended up having to replace the fence on his other sides and his neighbors said no after they found out he didn't help me out. That's karma

go in halfsies with them invisible fences. they are all the rage these days.

Do your neighbors make use of your fence to fence in their yard or is your fence the only part of their yard fenced? If your fence is the only fence bordering their yard, it's your fence, you deal with it.
You also might want to look and see where your property line is at, some places you have to build the fence off the line so it's completely on your property and totally your fence to fix and repair. Mine is completely in my yard.

BOOM.
I think if someone wants to replace it, they should pay for it. Go talk with the neighbor and tell them you would like to put up a new fence and you just wanted to get with them first to see if its okay (just a curtesy). If they are willing to pay they will offer.. If not, frick em.. Its your fence.

I did this with the guy behind me. I put up half the money for boards.
The fricker reused beau coup old boards and he ran the 2x4 wrong. He used metal joints at each one rather than put the joints at the 4x4.
So years later I'm now planning to put new studs on the 4x4 and new fence boards facing my way.
My dad says it's a waste of money and silly, but I don't like a shite looking fence.

I think that's a good way to turn your "good, though not close" relationship into "no" relationship with your neighbors. If it only surrounds your yard, pay for it yourself. Your fence, your cost. They just benefit from you being a good neighbor thus making them a good neighbor as well.
Believe me, the last thing you want is a bad relationship with a neighbor. I've been there and had to get a lawyer involved before. It's not fun and causes a tremendous amount of stress.

The neighbor behind me owns the fence on our property line and it's breaking down. I wish he'd ask me and I'd split it with him. I asked the neighbor on one side of me who owns a pool to go in with me on replacing my fence along our property line and he was happy to do so. I hardly ever talk to him, but he was fine with it.

good point. you're gonna have the flaming red arse if you put up a new fence and the neighbor tells you to move it over 2'.

If it’s all on your property you can ask but you shouldn’t be upset or offended if they say no.

I split with one neighbor on a fence which was technically more his problem than mine since he had a pool and I didn’t.
I offered a different neighbor a similar deal who also had a pool and they were an arse about it. I’m waiting them out because they are supposedly moving in a year or so and the buyer will be required by the insurance carrier to fix it in order to get coverage since there is a pool.

If it's your fence and you dont really need it, tear it down and let the dickhead neighbor put up his own fence because he has a pool.

As much as I would love to, I need it. I have small children and pets that I don’t want to fish out of the pool.

Sounds like you should pay 2/3, they should each pay 1/6.
