Is Dance Competition the worse of all the “Travel Leagues”?

I only have daughters (two, and no pics), so I missed out on the whole travel baseball thing.
My oldest played soccer up until a couple years ago. It wasn’t officially travel ball, but we did travel a few weekends a year because there are less teams to play as they get older.
My youngest has been dancing for 14 years now, and is on the competition team of her dance studio. These girls start on the comp team around 10-12 years old.
Now, I’m not saying dance competition is a waste of time. I can appreciate a great dancer. These girls work their asses off hours on end, perfecting their performances.
They go to 4-5 competitions a year. It’s an all weekend long thing. What I don’t get is why is dance competition nearly a “everyone gets a trophy” competition.
At my other daughter’s soccer tournaments, the winning team would get the cup, the winning players got medals, etc. You lost, you went home with nothing.
At dance competitions, they are judged and ranked Bronze to Platinum (or even Double Patinum). There is no point system.
The last comp I went to, not a single performance scored below a Gold (even though there were some really bad dances).
The studios have dance teams, everything from solos to entire team dances. I don’t understand why it can’t be a point system, and they have “Winners” in each category, plus an overall team winner.
My wife says “It’s little girls, it’s different.” I call BS. First, most of these girls are teenagers, and understand competition. Plus, even if they are only 10-12 years old, if they want to be on a comp team, they need to understand what competition means.
It’s the biggest money grab of any travel league.

From all the horror stories I've heard, it is.
You're spending 10s of thousands to teach your daughter to do what exactly? Not to mention actually having to sit through the recitals.
God bless you man.

It’s not because it’s dance, I put it with cheer, etc.
Its a great thing to learn, do, etc.
I just have a problem with the dance competitions.
My daughter is also on her high school dance team. They went to nationals last month. It was a competition. You dance, get judged, go home, or go to the next round.

No experience with Dance. I will take your word for it that its bad.
I can say youth hockey takes a lot of money and time commitment out there for the Northern families.
Got to say its fun as heck though when its a good group of parents and kids.

We know someone in neck deep. The amount of time and money spent is astounding. Hundreds of dollars for multiple outfits to be worn only one time for a single competition. Plus the comp fees and everything that goes with traveling away for a weekend.

Followed closely by cheer.

In my experience it's like this as far as toxic environment/parents:
1. Wrasslin Meets(pre high school).
2. Dance Competitions
3. Travel sports.
As far as money, competitive dance/cheer is by far the biggest suckhole of your hard earned $$.

I'm currently in this hell with my 11 yr old daughter. Thankfully after this season she wants to take a break so she can play soccer in the fall.

No. Travel ball has far more parental interest amongst both moms and dads.

I don't know if parents spend as much money on dance competitions as they do on travel ball, but in 2021 there were 430 teams that won a "world series championship".
The only thing I know about travel ball is what a friend of mine, who works with a guy who is evidently obsessed with his kids being in travel ball and from he tells me... Someone will start a travel ball team and they have tryouts and if someone's kid didn't make it and they are really into it, they get upset and start their own travel ball league team.
In fact, evidently this guy he works with was furious his kid didn't make the team. He had it out with whoever coaches the team. All of a sudden he hates that person. He starts his own team, has tryouts, several of the kids who didn't make his team was pissed and he was complaining about those parents approaching him and getting into it with them.
But what I am getting at is that because parents put so much money into it, it seems like at some point they will join a league or tournament where they are able to win.. And they give out trophies to first and second place and it seems like its more for the parents than the kids. They need something to show for all they invested into their kid playing travel ball and them traveling all over every weekend.
So maybe its something like that. Its probably the parents that make a bigger deal out of it and making sure their kid has a trophy, so they can put it up so that when people come over they can show what their kid did.. IDK, just a theory.

What happened to the good ole all star teams?
Play your regular season, get good, go play after season all stars... or stay home.
Move on to the next sports season.

Friends of ours have been traveling all over the country lately for "Cheer" competitions for their... 6 year old.
Everything is a scam.
We tried the karate thing years ago for our kids. They start you "cheap," and rapidly move you up to weapons or whatever, and we were looking at 100s of dollars per month for our kids. I was like... eh, we can just watch Bruce Lee movies.

You're a good husband, father and man!
Your girls are learning through all this and your support of them will pay off.

I just have a problem with the dance competitions.
At dance camps, the squads sweat out whether they will be deemed good enough to go to nationals. The teams finishing in the first 6 places are automatic qualifiers; as well, teams that score "superior" scores. The heartbreak of not finishing in the top 6 is offset by the assignment of a "superior" score.
The same organization that sponsors the dance camps also sponsor the nationals. They have travel packages, etc.
Not surprisingly, it seems about 80% of the teams at camp qualify for nationals, with most doing so because of "superior" scores.
Which is not to say that the girls don't thoroughly enjoy the experiences.

I had boys, but I couldn’t believe what the parents of girls in dance/spirit groups had to shell out. If they made the dance line, they had to purchase very expensive costumes for each week, then the girls had to try out for every routine. So they could buy these costumes and not be selected for a halftime routine. In addition to that, they had to sell ads for football programs. The only money we had to pay for our boys to play football was a sports physical and maybe some fees? This was 15 or so years ago...

This does sound miserable. I have done the whole junior tennis as a kid and now as a dad.
