No chance. You can have a nice peaceful time on most cruises if you pick the right time and price point. My wife and I love cruising because it’s relaxing. Our other vacations are more-so “trips” which is usually to national parks.

2 years ago I decided to try my first cruise. I hated it and so did the people who went with me. I can understand the appeal and why some people like it. It’s too many people and no peace for me. Too crowded. Not relaxing for me at all.

Not all cruises are equal.

True. But those river boat cruises in Europe are expensive as frick. They’re a very niche market that primarily caters to people interested in history and sightseeing.

Doing the same Royal from Rome to Athens in August. Doing 3 nights in Athens at the end, but when I go to Rome before, Sistine Chapel is closed for Assumption. I could be there when it opens on Monday morning for a couple of hours, then get to the port. If I can work that out, then I'll do 3 nights in Rome... if not, 1 night near the port & 2-3 nights in Rome after Athens.

(Last time I went, the Sistine Chapel was closed as the Cardinals were about to start meeting to elect Pope Francis. I swore up and down that if I ever go back, first thing I would do is go there)

Can’t judge the cruising lovers as I have never been on one. I know a lot of people who are obsessed with cruising. I have always liked to pick a place (did Exuma a month ago) and stay 8-9 days so we can really explore the area. We love Kauai so much we spend 2.5 weeks there every summer. I am not interested in popping in and out of ports for a day. I can’t connect with a place or get a real feel of it over 8 hours. I have seen the hordes of people getting off the boats at some of the Caribbean Islands to be bussed to 1/2 day excursions. Looks like cattle being herded. But we have 7+ billion people on this planet and some people love that type of vacation. People do what makes them happy. Just not for me.

I don't think the trashy people are on the cruises to Scandinavia.

NCL is a good line that prices the trash out of their target customer base. There are also some really nice luxury brand cruises out there as well. They’re not all Carnival ghetto trash.

That is absolutely hilarious if true.

I think many of these people think all cruises are $500 Carnival party cruises. If you want quality, you'll pay much, much more than that.

I've never done a cruise, had zero desire to do one, but my wife really wants to do one of the Viking River cruises in Europe

My wife and I just got back from the 12-day Paris to Swiss Alps Viking river cruise last week. I was skeptical going in because my only experience was Carribean cruises to tourist trap destinations. I found those smaller European cities along the Rhine and the Danube are so much more fun than the larger cities and Viking’s service is top notch. Since Viking now cruises all of the seas and every continent, we immediately started looking into planning another cruise. The European cruises seemed to be the best value by far. I’ll definitely do an European river cruise again soon.

I’ve been on a couple of Royal Caribbeans since early 2025. No issues, no problems with other passengers, and the boats were full.

So I believe the industry is ok.
