Every time I go there, I seem to have a pleasant experience and never run out of things to do.

Nope, totally trashy. Especially north alabama. Better to stay away.

Huntsville, Fairhope, The Coast, the Shoals, Auburn, Bham suburbs and several other good places to live in the state.

On the whole, I think it's rated properly.

Bham area is recognized as nice. Other places are recognized as the complete hell holes they are. If you could somehow rid the state of the obnoxious Alabama fans that have no affiliation with the state it would be a great place to live.

Alabama is a great place to live if you've never left the state or been anywhere outside of Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana.

Certainly.

But that doesn't mean it's really that awesome. Cost of living bumps it up a lot. You can raise a family in Birmingham in a really nice suburb, big house, good schools, and great food on $100k/year household income. Easily.

It's usually ranked in the 40s, so I'd say it's appropriately rated.

Better than some of its peers in the southeast, but still a bottom-tier choice nationally.

Alabama is by no means the best state I have ever lived in, but it's first in my heart due to being born and raised there. I have quite a bit of nostalgia for my childhood and teenage years, though I think most everyone does. But if I had to do it all over again I would. Alabama may not be the most sophisticated state, but it's filled with great people. My closest friends all hail from the state and, had I grownup elsewhere, I never would have met them.

I'd love to retire in the Fairhope area with a house on the bay.
