re: Is Alabama an underrated place to live?

Places in Alabama that are nice:
BHam suburbs
Fairhope, etc
Huntsville (easily the best)
Auburn
All of the people saying north Alabama is nice, I'd disagree a little bit. Between Birmingham and Huntsville is middle of the road to absolute meth wasteland depending on the town. Walker and Winston counties are beacons of white trash. Northeast part of the state is pretty but not much going on. No strong opinion on the shoals.
Of course, south Alabama excluding Mobile is mostly nothing outside of Dothan, which is not a terrible place to raise a family but there's nothing remarkable about it either (except for proximity to the beach I guess)

Auburn/Opelika is the greatest small town community on the planet.
Auburn is a great town. It is way better than Tuscaloosa.

B Ham suburbs, coastal or far north. Everything in between ain’t worth it IMO

Gotta watch out for Young Street, that place is no joke

It's awful. Nobody should move to or even visit Fairhope. Overrated. Just keep driving to Orange Beach or Destin. The women are ugly, the restaurants suck, and it smells....all the time. If a local gang member doesn't kill you then the flesh-eating bacteria in the Bay will.
Make sure you tell all of your friends this as well. Feel free to share this statement on Facebook and every other form of social media.
What you did there, I seent it.

I don't "get" Huntsville. Sure they have NASA and great public schools (woohoo), but I've been once and have no desire to ever go back.
Birmingham suburbs are nice.

Well done sir.
Ha. Just trying to do my part. Too many people are moving to Fairhope anyway. I get sad thinking about what Point Clear/South Section/Battles Rd will be like in 10+ years once RSA and other developers get done with it.
Fairhope won't be Fairhope anymore at this rate.

I love the Foley area. Maybe it's just because I'm from BR- but I was shocked at how "clean" everything was.
Or did I go at a good time?

When was the last time you went? They, much like Bham, have had a huge revitalization over the pat 5 years or so. It use to be a nice, but pretty boring city with nothing to do. It has improved greatly.

I have stated in other threads, I have been traveling through Alabama a lot recently. Top to bottom they kick Louisiana and Mississippi’s arse.

Agree. Live there now and love it. Great place to raise a family.
there is a reason the auburn/opelika area is growing like crazy.

Birmingham especially. 10 years ago, definitely not, but now it is night and day different.
I tell people this all the time. As a lifelong Bham resident, I’d have never recommended it as a place to live or visit ten years ago. Now, it’s a totally different place. The turnaround has been nothing short of amazing. With that said, there are still some real shitty parts of town.

Grown quite a bit and keeps growing. Can get to Smith Lake or Lake Guntersville in less than an hour, close to mountains, Nashville and Birmingham are a short drive, and the town is pretty and you will get 4 seasons.
and its not only NASA. Cummings Research Park is the second biggest research park in the states.

Huntsville is about to grow into the second largest metro in AL within the next 5-10 years. I think it’ll grow north towards the TN state line and closer to Nashville. The two metros will work together. It’ll be a combined metro area
