What do you have now and what are you wanting?

They’re superb if you want one for the “aesthetics” of it. But as far as functionality and maintenance goes, that’s another story.

You live one time

If you can afford it and not hurt your retirement, do it

We bought a Jeep just to have a fun vehicle

Whatever you think is cool then do it. Enough said
Me personally I think sports cars are childish.

I have an original, very stock 69 cougar convertible. It's fun for 30 miles. It's tiring after 75.
I want a 69 cougar convertible that's fun and comfortable for 1000 miles.

Dan Neil just did a great piece on the retractable top MX-5. I would get it before the convertible.

It is a bulletproof, fun car and holds value well.

That said, the Boxter is a more powerful, tractable car and holds value extensively well.

A Mustang is a great choice also, and if you really want a convertible, that would be the one.

Avoid the Nissan.

Sweet, I also have a 69 but it's an Impala. Why not just modernize your drivetrain?

I probably will, but that takes it off the road for a while.
A new hot rod motor, od trans and updated modern suspension/ brakes will push $15k. It still has rust and needs paint.
I may sell mine and buy a nice $30k car.

Makes sense. I'd love to LS swap mine but I really don't drive it a ton anymore. I'm thinking of selling it as I cruise around in my 90's GMC a lot more.

I recommend if you want a convertible a Mercedes 2018-2021 c43 (w205). Great daily driver. Great on back country roads with almost 400hp. With a tune you can get almost 500hp. M276 engine is bulletproof. Just an amazing car for what you get. You can find good examples for around $25k.

I picked mine up last year for $26k and it came loaded from the factory. It even had the AMG racing seats and performance exhaust. It also came with special factory gray matte paint. I get compliments almost everytime I drive it.
