Irrational wisdom of buying a sports car - anyone else get one?

This would be a third vehicle for us.
I’ve always wanted a sports car but never actually bought one. Never thought I would get one.
I’m 41 now…. my wife (no pics) and I are thinking about getting a simple analog roadster as a “just for us” car — something like an MX-5 or maybe a used Boxster. Minimal creature comforts, manual, top down, fun on back roads. Impossible to fit kids inside it. Just a weekend machine that makes us smile.
We test drove one already and honestly both loved it.
It feels a little irrational for me… but at the same time, making memories with my wife while we’re still young enough to really enjoy it also feels pretty rational.
Curious what y’all think. I struggle with decisions like this, and I am definitely the kind of guy that doesn’t know how to vacation or have fun.
I can’t decide if I would regret this or not. I rented a convertible Mustang for a work trip recently and loved it….except for the softer body/suspension and automatic transmission.

Do it. Ever time I buy a new car I remind my son he better learn to make his own money because I’m blowing all of mine.

Not a sports car but I have a classic car. It's completely irrational, but fun.

I have a C8 Z06 hard top. Do it, life is too short. Have some fun

Get an old British car. If you're somewhat mechanical, they are way more fun to drive than a newer Jap car

I am in my last year of paying off my 2022 BMW 840i convertible. I love every part of the car. I do look forward to having it paid off and saving that $1,580/month, though.
Needless to say, if your lifestyle and income are solid to afford, do it.

Do you have access to fun roads where you can actually get what you want out of the car?
I had two 911 turbos. Older (relatively analog, manuals).
Absolutely loved them, but tbh I only got like 3 tenths out of them because my location has basically no roads suited for a car like that. I still loved owning them, but I can’t say it didn’t feel a little like a waste when 90% of my driving was normal commuting and errands amongst traffic and shitty roads.
I sold my last one a few years back and I’m irrationally considering getting a miata or boxster even though my location hasn’t changed lol.
My dream is a 997.1 gt3 but good lord what a waste that would be (I probably wouldn’t want to track it).

Would love to.
We want accessible fun. Not ready for a project car yet to be honest.
I really like the Nissan Z but it doesn’t have a convertible model. The stylist for the new one definitely understood the mission though.
We keep coming back to the MX-5.

MIATA is an acronym, you know.

I decided to get a 911 convertible a few months ago at 37 with two kids in booster seats. They’ll only fit in the back row for so long and if your lifestyle can support it why not. It’s been great.
Sure it’s expensive and creates some unique headaches occasionally but you don’t want to die wondering what if.
Can’t take the money with you. It’s even more reasonable if you’re considering something like a Miata or used Boxster.

Depends on the car. We have quiet roads here with some curves and even light elevation.
But using all of a 500 horsepower Camaro SS or 911’s capability: not around here. At least not on public roads.
MX-5 or used base level Boxter? Nissan Z or Audi TT? Yeah. Probably could get a lot out of those.

Just buy a Tesla. It'd be just as powerful and 10 times more comfortable.

You can rationalize or rationalize anything. But know this, there isn’t a trophy for the richest guy in the cemetery. Do you want to be 70 years old kicking yourself in the butt wishing you would have lived life when you were able to? I just bought a Z06 and spent a ridiculous amount of money on it, no way to justify it. So just go do it and live your life .

It’s the same rationale my wife and I used when we bought our sports car. Life’s too short, if you can afford, buy it - you can always sell it later.

OP: I’m looking at light weight, tossable roadsters with a focus on driving experience and not really concerned with practicality or creature comforts.
