That is anxiety. It’s an absolute sleep killer. Talk to your doctor about anxiety meds, get some therapy, try mindfulness meditation.

Yeah, you need sleep. Until you can get Rx stuff, just take over the counter, Benadryl, ZzzQuil, etc. Start at lower than recommended dosage.

Get some lab work done and go to a sleep specialist, there's all kinds of things that can screw up your sleep and you want to make sure the right issue is being treated.
Anti histamine sleep aids have been linked to some dementia so be mindful of the risks. There's an app for Apple Watches that tracks your oxygen saturation levels, it can be beneficial if you suspect sleep apnea.

You may have fatal insomnia go to the doctor man. It will drive you crazy and you'll die a horrible death and there isn't a cure. Or maybe you just have super aids I dunno
WTH. Op, sounds like the root cause is worry/anxiety/over thinking that has you up at night. Like others suggested, cut out alcohol completely and screen time right before bed, cut down ingestion of negative news stories, check out an app like Headspace or Calm to start softening and rewiring your mind.

I can't really figure out what's going on with me but if I have another night where I get 2-4 hours of sleep, I'm gonna lose it. For reasons I cannot explain, I wake up around 2:30, 3 am every single night and then I lie there thinking about everything imaginable. Then I start to feel some general anxiety because of fear of no sleep, and then it's just off to the races. I'm wide awake and sleep is just something I'm going to have to do without.
Anybody here ever experience long periods of insomnia? If so what did you do about it? I'm worried about prescription sleep aids because you always hear about these nightmare scenarios, but honestly at this point I feel like the pros would outweigh any cons. I know I may wake up in the back yard at 4am cutting the grass or something but if it gets me 8 hours of sleep, I'm game..
What would the OT do?
have you tried a hard day of physical labor? that will be sure to make you pass out at the end of it.

You’d get CPAP only if you have sleep apnea. IF that’s your diagnosis and treatment, you have to give it a chance to let it work. Many don’t like the feel of it, and give up too soon. I have sleep apnea and if I ever go out of town overnight, I’d turn around and come back if I forgot my CPAP machine.

See a medical professional. ASAP

If you don't want to try meds for sleep and anxiety there is a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). You could find a psychologist who does that.

Maybe your dr. can try a low dose of Zolpidem CR or Eszopiclone, if going to sleep is not a problem. I can’t imagine sleep walking or nightmares a problem at low doses.

I have dealt with a milder form of what you’re describing. Sometimes, I wake up a couple of hours before my alarm (always on work days) and begin to stress.
Going to bed earlier has helped me with this. If I’m asleep by 9:30 or 10 and happen to pop awake at 4, I’ve already slept a decent amount. That realization takes pressure off of the situation and generally helps me fall back to sleep.
I also have addressed (as best I can) work and life stressors that lead to waking up in the first place. And I stopped drinking during the week.
And exercise certainly helps, but it’s tough to come by on weekdays for me. I work long hours, then spend the rest of the little remaining time with the wife and kid, and then it’s time to hop in bed.

Seroquil(sp?) for the win.
25mg, night night.

I sleep on average 4-5 hours per night. I know it's not normal, but i've been doing it for years. no issues.

Did you quit drinking recently?
Posted on 10/5/23 at 12:45 pm to Giantkiller
This advice is bad. You should be drinking more. When you wake up at 3 am just smoke a joint and go back to sleep.

I would smoke pot.
Someone else mentioned it, but I get such shite sleep when I drink. So dont do that.
