Sounds utterly miserable. I would consider some intentional psychedelic doses - most likely psilocybin (mushrooms).

Not to sleep though. Maybe to ease his mind, but you dont want to take that late in the day when you are trying to sleep. that shite wires you.

I meant that the impact of such an experience could be to release some shite that is keeping him awake over time - not as a one-time on a specific night to fall asleep thing.

For reasons I cannot explain, I wake up around 2:30, 3 am every single night and then I lie there thinking about everything imaginable. Then I start to feel some general anxiety because of fear of no sleep, and then it's just off to the races. I'm wide awake and sleep is just something I'm going to have to do without.

This is why I now take trazadone many nights.

I have dealt with the exact same thing you have described here. The Insomnia is being caused by sleep anxiety, which is your brain and body now fearing getting in bed and going to sleep because you are worried about not getting enough sleep.

As others have mentioned, there are several supplements that could help you.. look up Andrew Huberman on YouTube as he has some good natural supplements that can and do help.

Really though, your own mental state and relationship with sleep is what’s causing it. As someone else said, learning to simply “not care” like you once did is the trick, although that’s easier said than done, I know.

Look into the Sleep Reset app, it’s basically a CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy insomnia) program at a fraction of the cost of a real sleep study. You will find that they tell you in order to reset your biological clock, you should actually go to bed Later to begin with and rise at the same time each day, getting sunlight within 30 minutes. This will make you more tired the first week of doing it and hopefully make you fall and stay asleep quicker.

Also, get blood work done if you haven’t to rule out it’s not anything else external causing it. Good luck, I know it’s a bitch.

Get up and work out of you know you won't be able to go back to sleep. Get something positive out of it. Maybe that will relieve some stress and you get in better shape.

Take a Benadryl an hour before you go to bed. It’s just enough to keep you asleep all night without being over powering.

Had exactly the same problem. My doctor gave me a light non-addictive prescription for trazadone. Take it before bed and absolutely works.

In my other post (deleted), I basically said this. I've been dealing with it for months, and very early going through CBT-i and like it so far.

Get morning sunlight directly in your eyes (no sunglasses) preferably at sunrise or within an hour afterwards - it’s free and can help reset your circadian rhythm. Try taking magnesium glycinate and 1-3 inositol supplements (on Amazon) about 30 minutes to an hour before bed.

Workout and cut out alcohol. Read a real book or watch a relaxing video on YouTube like a guy camping in a rainforest or something. Go to bed when you can’t keep your eyes open anymore. Keep your room super cold/dark and don’t read or watch tv in bed.

You can go to Groupon and get the consultation for under $100.

Insomnia alone can't get you the prescription but it sounds like your Insomnia is causing some PTSD.

You have to wear your body out during the day. Exercise. Always take stairs, not elevators, walk if you can. Go to the gym. Lift weights.
Drink water and caffeinated drinks are a no after 11am.
Do not look at blue light (phone, computer etc) before bed. Do not eat or drink 2 hours before bed.
Get the SUN. Yes the sun. In your eyes, every day, especially in the morning. Your cyrcadian rythem may be off.
Read a book and don't look at intense TV (news, horror movies) before bed.
Look up how the marines fall asleep and try that when you wake up in the middle of the night

I did the exact same thing for years. I went to a sleep clinic and here is the basic program:

Don’t go to bed until you are sleepy (11 pm with 6 am alarm).

Don’t watch tv or use your computer/phone for a couple of hours before bedtime.

I will use one AirPod at low volume to listen to a podcast that has a monotone speaker on a subject that is interesting enough to focus my mind, but not full of loud noises like laughing or animal screeching. I often listen to a Lewis and Clarke audio book by William R Lighton for free on the podcast app.

Don’t take afternoon naps.

It will take some time, but I don’t have a problem with insomnia anymore.

Best of luck.

Maybe some Melatonin or Magnesium Glycinate.

i'm a big fan of melatonin. i've heard about some people having night terrors from it, but it's money for me.

i don't take it every night, just when there's a lot on my mind.

i'm very against medication outside of extreme sickness

that being said, my son's ex girlfriend was addicted to it and couldn't sleep without it. definitely recommend an attempt but keep it measured.

What would the OT do?

Here's what I'd do (hypothetically): get some Cbd oil or isolate powder and mix it with oil (1 fl oz - 30 ml with dropper) Get a vial of Indica (not sativa) resin 750 mg or so from a dispensary. Warm both in some water on the stove and then squirt the resin into the cbd and shake it up. Start with 3 drops under your tongue 45 mins before you want to be asleep. Hypothetically.

I've been having insomnia lately too. My issue is I'm fat and out of shape and hate myself, with a healthy dose of acid reflux.

Hey, you're not alone. Last year, exactly as I turned 50, this shite started happening to me all of a sudden. I started suffering from dry mouth disorder, which I involuntarily breathe through the mouth instead of nose. This caused dry mouth and that kept on waking me every hour or so. Needed to drink water constantly. I went to a doctor and turns out I have a nostril that it is not letting me breathe correctly and I might need surgery. I need a 2nd opinion from another doctor.

Worse thing that you can do is start thinking about stuff in the middle of the night, that will keep you awake.

What I do in this case I go downstairs, sit on my tv recliner, get a pillow and blanket, turn on the air purifier and most of the time I fall asleep. Not sure why but it works.
