I go through the same thing from time to time OP. Its absolutely miserable if I don't have anything to help.

The thing that really helps is Xanax, or benzos in general. Works like 100% of the time. But I don't have a script, so I don't even have the option unless someone gives me one. Sucks.

Edibles are great for insomnia. Take 10-20 mg and it'll knock ya out for sure.

Beyond that, Benadryl helps sometimes, but isn't all that reliable.

Drink a lot less coffee and have a lot more sex. And quit worrying about everything! We live in a clown world and we’re surrounded by a-holes. Do what you can and frick the rest.

Been there a 100 times on some nasty alcohol benders. Don’t drink and go run outside until you feel like you’re gonna have a heart attack, you’ll sleep like a baby.

Yeah, I have bouts of some gnarly insomnia (4-6 hours over 3-4 days every few months). The good news is, its not going to kill you. At least not very quickly.

Rx sleep aids might be something worthwhile to have around. I dont take them nightly or anything but when it gets bad, itll break the cycle. Typically if I can get a good night of sleep, I'll get out of the 1-3 hour a night cycle.

My psych doctor put me on sonata. Its basically really short acting ambien. Downside is, youll wake up sometimes when it wares off in the night but if its early enough, just take another.

It aint all xanax and ambien. Talk to your doctor if this is really a chronic issue.

But theres other obvious advice to follow too. Eat good. Cut screentime and caffeine. Work out. Try to get in bed the same time everyday.

I know it sucks, the lack of sleep, but you also aint alone in that struggle.

I worked nights for 9 years and still have to pull them occasionally. I got hooked on Benadryl during those 9 years. It got to the point where that didn’t work anymore. I had a sleep study and a narcolepsy test in the past year. Now I’m on Ambien 12.5 mg CR. It’s working well so far. I just wish I could sleep longer.

I have had a problem like yours. My big issues were waking up after less than a hour of sleep as if I took a nap and I’m ready to get up and waking up early around 3:00AM and not being able to push worrying thoughts out of my mind. Two suggestions.

1. Look on Amazon for “ Life Extension Neuro-mag Magnesium L-threonate, Magnesium L-threonate, Brain Health, Memory & Attention, Gluten Free, Vegetarian, Non-GMO, 90 Vegetarian Capsules”. You take 3 of these an hour or so before bedtime and it’s really helped me with not waking up after an hour or so of sleep and not getting back to sleep. Some people say L-threonate gives them night terrors. With this supplement, I had some negative dreams like death of a sibling etc but nothing I would call a night terror.

2. Find a podcast or YouTube video to listen to. When I wake up around 3:00AM and feel my mind beginning to race with thoughts of work, family, etc, I play one of these and fall back to sleep eventually. Music didn’t work for me because my brain didn’t actively engage in the music. Listening to someone talk, especially telling a story, engages my mind and I can’t think about work while paying attention to a storyteller. I really like videos on YT from “WW2 Stories.” They are usually long, the speaker is somewhat monotone, and the stories are interesting to me. The long Jim Cornett wrestling ones work for me too. I start one of these and put the phone face down so there’s no light.

I was going to make fun of you, but I understand the frustration.

Will it kill you? No. Will it age you prematurely? Definitely.

I've been burning the candle at both ends since I was 16. I haven't gotten more than 6 hours in...17 years or so. I average 3-4.

Every night I go to sleep around 2. I wake up 5 minutes before my alarm goes off at 6.

My grandfather was the same way. Only he took little naps throughout the day after age 55 or so. Did a sleep study, the opinion is we are biphasal and meant to sleep a 3-4 hours twice a day.

These days I just use it as an opportunity for organizing. And never get that second nap I need...

Very similar situation. I put on scambaiting videos on YouTube and set a timer on my phone for an hour to shut down everything. I put the volume as low as it can go and the phone near my ear. I usually fall back asleep as it takes my mind off things.

Pick some mindless videos you like and give it a try.

Cutting down on alcohol before bedtime can help.

Ibuprofen before bedtime with a small bit of food to protect your stomach can be weirdly effective, but don't take it every day.

I've heard the best thing to do if you wake up and can't sleep is rather than just toss and turn, go do something and try to completely reset, get up, do dishes, etc.

It was common for our ancestors to sleep in two sessions and get up in the night to do things, the practice of sleeping in 1 long block is relatively recent.

Going through it now...and have been since getting off Klonopin in April. I'd been on it for nearly 15 years for sleep. After the "shortage," I decided to taper off. The withdrawals are hell - do not get on benzos to help sleep.

Last week I went to Horn of Plenty in Gonzales, LA. I think I'm finally on the right path to getting some decent sleep. But every night, I'm waking up between 1:00 and 3:00. Without fail.

It sucks. But if you can't go back to sleep...make best of that time and enjoy working out.
