I have been taking Trazadone since 1995 after injuring my low back. At the beginning I would take it occasionally. Now as I get older and my back hurts more I take it every night and more of it. Like the OP if I wake up my mind starts working in overdrive. If I wake up after 3AM I just get up.

When I get back from work and have an early wakeup the following morning, I will take 20 mg of melatonin around 7:30 p.m. It'll make me drowsy as heck by 10 p.m. and I have improved my sleep tremendously. I also echo the voices on here who promote exercise - which for me dramatically cut down on restless leg syndrome for me. Minimize alcohol and increasing water intake it good as well, with a strong adviser of urinating before bed as well. Cut down/eliminate screen time before bed at least 1/2 hour before.

Friend,

For two decades I have averaged three to four hours of sleep each night. Even as a teen I rarely got more than seven hours of sleep. The extra time awake for me has been a gift, but it seems to you a curse.

Perhaps giving up all screen time would help your brain. Replace the time you would give to the internet and TV with time reading a book or gardening, and I suspect your mental health could improve. Alcohol, stimulants and depressants could also poorly impact your sleep patterns. If you drink alcohol, stop.

When you awake in the middle of the night and want to go back to sleep, do you sit and pray? Do you do any writing? I find that when the Spirit wakes me in the middle of the night and the world around me is asleep my writing is at its best. This is the time to write letters to friends with whom you have lost touch over the years, finish up on birthday letters, or even start your Christmas card list (am I the only disappointed with modern Christmas cards including printed letters that are no longer hand written and personal?)

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I used to have insomnia, a regular meditation practice e worked for me. Gotta learn how to shut the brain down. It may take a few months and isn’t easy, but it will work better than a pill in long term.

This was me for years. No problems falling asleep, so melatonin didn't really do anything for me. But I'd wake up at 2 or 3 and be awake for hours.

That changed when I started taking GABA. Now I sleep through the night with zero problems.

Update: another night of 2-3 hours of terrible sleep. No alcohol whatsoever and took some melatonin but to no avail. Just another night thinking and thinking and thinking. One of my kids was at a friends house so I tried to sleep in his room for a change of pace but all for naught. I tried the ‘body scan relaxation’ method but kept getting caught up with the fact I couldn’t relax my neck for some reason. Also tried some focused breathing, including one where you breath in for 4 seconds, hold it for 7, then blow out for 8. Nothing. Finally got up to do some dishes at about 2:30 and finally fell asleep about 4am. Then the alarm for work went off at 615.

Now to boot, I appeared to have gotten a sinus infection or bronchial infection so that’s awesome.

I found an online doc called PlushCare that can prescribe Trazodone like same day. I’m gonna try that. Got a zoom appt at 10am.

Hopefully it works. Because seriously- I feel like death is imminent and it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me in my life.

My friends! I’m very proud to announce to you all that I got about 10 hours of sleep last night. I had a teledoc appt yesterday and the doc prescribed hydroxyzine. I don’t really understand how it works but holy shite, it knocks your arse out. This morning I feel groggy and almost like a hangover but I think that may legit be symptoms of just not getting enough sleep. Either way, I will gladly take it over no sleep.

Does anyone here have any experience with this medication? Because if not, I wholeheartedly recommend. He said it works a little different than trazodone as it also attacks the anxiety portion of insomnia while also acting a bit like the family of Benadryl.

Regardless I feel sooooo much better. I sincerely thank you all for your advice and I hope anyone else going thru similar situations was able to take something away from all this.

Getting three to four hours of sleep for that long will catch up to you dude. There's no way around it. Look up Matthew Walker and listen to some of his podcasts. He's probably the most esteemed sleep doctor on earch. Then come back and try to call that a "gift."

I can't really figure out what's going on with me but if I have another night where I get 2-4 hours of sleep, I'm gonna lose it. For reasons I cannot explain, I wake up around 2:30, 3 am every single night and then I lie there thinking about everything imaginable. Then I start to feel some general anxiety because of fear of no sleep, and then it's just off to the races. I'm wide awake and sleep is just something I'm going to have to do without.

Anybody here ever experience long periods of insomnia? If so what did you do about it? I'm worried about prescription sleep aids because you always hear about these nightmare scenarios, but honestly at this point I feel like the pros would outweigh any cons. I know I may wake up in the back yard at 4am cutting the grass or something but if it gets me 8 hours of sleep, I'm game..

What would the OT do?

If you're open to meds try Luvox, it's for OCD but is great for intrusive thoughts & rumination. If you haven't tried Ambien, give it a shot. If that doesn't work try Trazodone. That'll put your arse to sleep. First few days it'll leave you groggy the next morning, but your body will adjust and soon you'll be waking up alert & refreshed the next morning. Just don't stop it because your body will reset & you'll have to go through that groggy period again.

For whatever reason, your brain has associated lying in bed with racing thoughts, not going to sleep.

If you ever take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, get up and go in a different room and read a book until you feel like you’re about to fall asleep. Then go back to bed.

Staying in your bed while your mind is racing just compounds the problem.

You sounds like a fatty who doesn’t exercise, drinks too much and watches tv late

Fix those things and you should be good
