I'd avoid anywhere in Central America strictly from a violence standpoint. My buddy's brother is a Microsoft guy in Belize. He can't go anywhere without armed security. Of course, he's basically a God there....

Chile or Estonia. Both high on the Cato Freedom Index and low on the List of National Debt. The last thing you want is to have another financial crisis overseas and have them seize your money a la Cyprus.

Chile is my top destination as I feel it has more to offer.

I would think the risk in Estonia isn’t local but the Russian bear next door.

Such as when Russia picked a fight with Georgia circa 2008 or when they annexed half of Ukraine.

Good choices. These places still have an appreciation for freedom unlike many places in the world today- because they know and remember what the other side of the coin looks like.

I never once felt unsafe in Belize, and I've been through the majority of the country, to include Belize City, Dangriga, and Balmopan.

The worst thing we had to worry about was the occasional pickpocket in Belize City, but that's a problem you'll find in most cities in Europe.

Costa Rica
My second choice.

Had friends that lived in Costa Rica for a few years. Their only complaint was that everything rusted. They went through TVs and just a lot of stuff because it would go bad after a few months due to the saltwater.

They did have monkeys that would come to their back yard every day to hang out and beg for snacks.

In no particular order, Belize, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland. I’d consider the Canary Islands but I don’t speak Spanish. I saw someone mention the Maldives but no way I’d want to live anyplace that requires citizens to be Islamic.

If I were doing the small island thing I think I would look at Saint Kitts and Nevis. You can buy citizenship there for $150K plus a real estate investment of $200K for a shared unit or $400K for a single-family which you can sell after 5 years IIRC.

Probably Southern France or Prague.

My two favorite areas on Earth.

The Netherlands would be next.

The classic line about the difference between Australia & New Zealand is apropos here-

“Everything in Australia is trying to kill you, everything in New Zealand is trying to hug you.”

The worst fauna issue with NZ is a couple of species of spiders.

Weak tea compared to Australia.

The Bern region of Switzerland or Barthelona

If you want to stand in awe of the magnificent alps and be surrounded by lush forests and crystal blue lakes, go no further than this area of Switzerland.

I also really loved the laid back vibe in Barcelona

Edinburgh or somewhere nearby
Somewhere like Delft or Haarlem in the Netherlands
Some smallish town in Upper Bavaria or across the border in Austria

Honestly, I think I'd be a lot more comfortable moving to a social democratic country than I am watching America become one. At least then I'm availing myself of a system someone else chose, rather than watching the decline at home.

If I had to live somewhere outside the US, I'd probably move to an island in the Caribbean.
