I can work from anywhere. Want to get out of the Texas heat.

Considering taking the family (two kids under 4) and renting a house/cabin somewhere cooler for the entire month of mid-July to mid-August.

Considering Lake Tahoe, Gatlinburg, New England area, Northern California coast, even upper Wisconsin/Michigan.

Must haves is cooler weather. Anyone else do this and have recommendations?

Ideally, there'd be nearby attractions for weekend excursions. Not interested in the beach.

Cost for the rental would be a prime concern for me. I can do the same and would love to spend a month in Jackson Hole, but there's no way I could afford it.

Chaparral, NM doesn't have Texas heat.

Durango, CO is a great jumping off spot for tons of weekend excursions at that time of year.

Find one where there is a pirate who can teach you to sail.

I'd look into Monterey, CA. Aquarium and beach for the kids, bike paths, near many state (Big Sur) and national parks (Yosemite & Sequoia), and "Car Week" is usually in early-mid August.

It may be foggy, but it won't be as hot as Satan's steam room.

Door County in Wisconsin is BEAUTIFUL.

Check out Egg Harbor in Fall

Things to Do in Door County in October and November
And it's only an hour north of Green Bay if y'all wanted to go catch a game at Lambeau or experience their game day atmosphere. It's pretty neat how hard they tailgate for an NFL Franchise.

I’d look near a National Park and hike all month. Tetons would be my first look

Cannon Beach or Seaside area of Oregon.

Average highs are ~ 65 deg in the summer. About an hour or so drive to Portland if you want to do some more “big city” type stuff with the family. I did a driving vacation from Seattle to Astoria to Portland about 5 years ago and couldn’t believe how green everything was, even in the fall. Like a deep deep green you don’t see much on the Gulf coast.

A month long anywhere nice is going to be expensive as frick, so consider your budget OP. Many places like traverse city, MI and New England have very short seasons so they aren’t going to cut a deal. I’d get on this stat.

Also, personally I’d consider european countryside in a small town with a quick train ride to a big city.

Finger Lakes in Upstate NY and Upper Peninsula in Michigan are going to be what you're looking for.

Look at Northern New Mexico. Angel Fire area. A lot of Rentals in the summer out that way. Great weather and close to Colorado.

Manchester, VT. This is my favorite spot in the summer. Finger Lakes in NY wouldn't be bad either. Great weather. Plenty to do. Nice people.
