All of that sounds great! Door county, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Northwoods, and upper Michigan on the lake are all awesome. Gatlinburg gets a little crazy, but you may want to check out Brevard, North Carolina or Black mountain, North Carolina. Both are pretty close to asheville, and have lots of amenities and things to do while still keeping The rustic vibe.

We spent 10 days in Montana last month, though, and it was one of the best trips of my life

I would look at Maine if you are considering the NE. It can get hot I most of the NE during that time, but Maine stays pretty cool.

North east.

The weather is so perfect in that area in the summer

Vermont or Maine would be top tier.

Another one I would recommend is Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Great lake town closer to the PNW.

I would skip anywhere in the West other than maybe the coast of the PNW. The fires are usually really bad during the period yall will be there, I’d really hate if I spent all that money on a rental just to be in smoky air the whole time.

Really torn.

There are some very nice places with views in the Smokey's in the 5-6K range. Just wondering if it will be too touristy and still kind of hot.

Durango is very intriguing.

I'm kind of leaning to one of those because we could do the drive in 2 days vs 3-4 for upstate NY, upper West Coast.

By I really would like to see the Adirondacks or the Rockies in Idaho.

This is really tough.

After talking to family in Reno, we're pretty much striking Tahoe out due to the constant threat of fires.

My top 3 right now are:

Durango
Smokeys
Fingerlake region

I will caution you on Durango. While the fires in California will assuredly be worse, Colorado (and Utah, Idaho, Montana, etc) gets hit hard by the California smoke in the summers. We didn’t have any fires this year but we still had at least 20-30 days where it was borderline unsafe to go outside

Cannon Beach or Seaside area of Oregon.

Cannon Beach is a favorite of mine. That’s the first place I ever saw the ocean and I’ve been there a good half dozen times. They filmed The Goonies there; the movie ended on the beach in front of haystack rock.

That area would be sick for about a week. A month there would be boring. Water is dry suit cold, 45 degrees.

Ok, crazy how the fires are really such an issue now.

Maybe it's safer to look East.

I agree with you, maybe if you were looking at a year long rental the West would be better but the timeframe you’re looking at can get pretty hairy. And the Northeast will be absolutely idyllic during that same time period as well.

Smokys are closer but looking at the weather, it's still pretty hot.

Just not sure if I'm up for a 3 day drive to New England there and back with two kids under 5...

Also don't want to deal with a ton of crowds so maybe no Smokys?

even upper Wisconsin/Michigan.

Add in Minnesota too. If you have to remote work, so not just a month long vacation these are your least touristy and probably most affordable options.

Amazing weather, beautiful lakes, and depending on where you stay and you could possible do weekend trips to medium/big cities with stuff for the family too.

A couple people already mentioned New Mexico, but I would say Cloudcroft, NM. It looks like Gatlinburg without all the tourist trap stuff, just cabins on top of a mountain. You are 30 mins from White Sands, a little over an hour from Carlsbad Caverns. Santa Fe is about three hours away. The lower Grand Canyon in AZ is about 7 hours away. You can drive Route 66.
Cloudcroft is the southern most ski resort in the US. Summer temps range from 45 deg low to 75 deg high

Ok Cloudcroft is definitely now on the radar. Only 9 hours away and much cooler and less touristy than Gatlinburg area.

Thanks!

White Sands is like going to the beach without the water. The sand is gypsum sand, so it doesn’t get hot. It stays about 70 deg. It has 30+ ft dunes you can sled down. Your kids will love it.

I'm not finding as many places that look good in Cloud Croft/Ruidoso.

Where should I like besides ABNB?

I recommend Compton or maybe even Watts.

There is always something happening.
