did a driving vacation from Seattle to Astoria to Portland about 5 years ago and couldn’t believe how green everything was, even in the fall. Like a deep deep green you don’t see much on the Gulf coast.
I traveled to north of Seattle for work one august and I was floored by the richness of the green that I saw there. The only thing I can compare it to is photos of Ireland I’ve seen.

East Tennessee is CHEAP and much cooler in the mountains during the summer. It might get up in the 80's or 90's but it doesn't stay up there long at all.

Monterey California meets your requirements.

Mosquitoes in Wisconsin during the summer are worse than South LA or TX. You can sit outside without a screened area.

If you are researching in the Gatlinburg area look at Bryson City. The Nantahala area is nice too. There is a lot for families to do and see around town and a ways away if you stay in Bryson city. Tubing, Lake Fontana, downtown shops, hillbilly groceries stores nearby train museum (you gotta do the scavenger hunt), the railroad, incredible views all around you.
Your little kids will love it, the whole family will love playing in and around Deep creek and Lake Fontana which are wonderfully cool that time of year. It does get warm in town but it’s so shady most places where cabins are; if you are near a creek it’s not bad.
I’m tired of the beach too. Last year we stayed a week in the Nantahala area and this year we stayed a week right by Deep Creek and went tubing almost every day. I could definitely stay in those areas 3 more weeks.

Tahoe puts you in striking distance to a lot of places to visit(Yosemite, Sequoia, SF if you feel like it, Napa) and don’t need to be on the lake to have a good time. Only concern is wildfires. North side of the lake is more mellow and less touristy. Truckee is a nice town to be near.

Somewhere in San Juan Islands in Washington. Stayed a week with family this past June and was quite relaxing. We rented a three bedroom house with big yard and all amenities. Wasn't terribly expensive.

Lot of really great suggestions in here.
I've done extremely preliminary research. Seeing a few possibilities in the 6K range which is about where I'm good with.
I considered Europe but we'd be going the exact time they're all on vacation and it would be kind of a pain in the arse to work with the time difference.

Broken bow or Wichita Mountains near Fort Sill. Great race track in Lawton and home the best Oklahoma burger in the USA
But he wants out of the heat..
Tennessee is about right.

Almost got lost in the Witchita Mts 7-8 years ago. Was hiking solo and got turned around.
Sun was going down and I was heading the wrong way until I luckily stumbled into someone going the right way.
Would have been an interesting night hanging out with all the buffalo.

Agreed. I prefer the hiking of the Tetons however

That place is really trippy. First time I drove thru the area drove right by a Buffalo laying down and couldn’t believe it. The entire place is like that supposedly but never hiked any of it.

I agree on finger lakes... Was there in August. Beautiful, fantastic weather and nice people.

Central or Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Hershey - nice amusement park HERSHEYPARK, Chocolate World (a free ride that takes you through how they make Hershey chocolate with a free piece of candy given out at the end),there is also a cool trolley ride tour of the town
Lancaster - Amish country also has Dutch Wonderland an amusement park more geared to kids under 6 or 7.
90 min to 2 hours from Philadelphia if you want a day trip to see historic sights and the best cheese steaks at Jims
about an hour or a little more to Gettysburg. cool trip - get a guide that they provide.

I spent several weeks in Rhode Island this past summer and loved it. Bristol is a great area.

Lake Winnipesaukee up in NH. It was always a blast when I'd go there as a kid.
