I was asked to donate a relatives military items to LSU's Ole War Skule museum

A close relative was killed in the Pentagon on 9/11. He was an alum of LSU, and was a part of the ROTC program. After graduating he was commissioned as an officer.
I'm torn here. He loved LSU, and I'm sure he'd be proud to be part of the museum. But, after witnessing how LSU treated Troy Middleton's legacy and family, I'm not sure I want anything of his entrusted to the university.
Not that I'm worried that they would treat him like they treated Middleton. Its just that LSU's actions have been pissing me off the past 2 years, and I've been distancing myself from it.
I have two of his flight jackets - both the old school leather one and the green service jacket - as well as some medals and other memorabilia.
What would the OT do?

Is it an actual donation or just being put on loan to the museum? If the alternative is sitting in your attic or closet you might we well let them display it

I wouldn't give LSU anything like that at this point. You could try just a long term loan with the stipulation you get the material back, but a lot places don't like doing that.

After seeing how they treated Middleton, I would not.

No way in hell I’d give it to LSU for some useless 18 year year old to find some ignorant excuse to run my family members name through the mud

I doubt you could ever get it back, once you “loaned” it to them.

Don't.
And tell them why.
And tell them why.

I might allow display but make sure you maintain ownership so you can retract without issue later. I would probably get a lawyer involved as additional insurance. Not happy with LSU and how they handled the Middleton family.

They'll display your military items right next to the George Floyd memorial.

Find some place else to display them, if that's what you want

Definitely DO NOT donate it. Lend it to them. In that way they can display it, but when they go full Marxist (or Muslim) take it back.

I’ts almost tempting to buy a duplicate jacket off eBay get his name on it and donate that one.
Especially if you have someone in mind to bequeath the jackets to otherwise maybe donate one of them and a few medals.

I'd find somewhere else to display and more importantly honor your relative.

If you want to donate his items to a 9-11 memorial, I'm sure there are a bunch of other ones you could donate them to, but given the Troy Middleton treatment and the recent trends at LSU, I would not entrust anything to them. If you elect not to give them the stuff, you should make it clear to them your reasons and that you do not approve of the direction LSU has taken of late.

Find someplace else. Then tell them why they can’t have nice things.

Don't do it- LSU's actions lately show they do not give a shite about Alumni.

Something tells me that while he'd initially be proud to be a part of the museum, he would be equally (or even more) disgusted by LSU's handling of Middleton and appreciate not having his stuff displayed there.

That is a completely reasonable stance to take IMO. And just because you're not worried about them doing anything doesn't mean they won't eventually. I'm quite sure the Middleton family weren't "worried" about that either, and now their guy is being tarnished and blasted by the very university that benefitted from their family for decades.
IMO I get why you're torn, but I would choose not to do it, and would type a letter very carefully explaining to them why.

100% agreed. Frick the LSU administration

just being put on loan to the museum?
Do this, that way the family can recall it anytime they choose.
