Greg Sankey Addresses Future Of SEC Championship Game Amid CFP Evolution

The future of the SEC Championship Game remains secure for now, but Commissioner Greg Sankey acknowledged Monday at SEC Media Days that the conference continues to evaluate its long-term role as the College Football Playoff landscape evolves.

With the SEC entering its first season with a nine-game conference schedule, questions have surfaced about whether playing an extra championship game is still worthwhile in the expanded playoff era.

“I think even the move to 12 has created pressure around championship games,” Sankey said. “We’ve talked through the factors that support the pro list, and we’ve talked about some of the con list, the negatives that need to be considered. And we have some time. We will have a conference championship game the first Saturday in December. We have contracts and plans in place well beyond that. But we have time for consideration. One of the factors for us is what will happen with the College Football Playoff.”
