My wife's mother did very similar....cognition was most poor, their visit had ended, wife said, "I love you, Mom' - expecting no response and then, 'I love you, too, Bettie'

Last words they ever exchanged and has continued to be a blessing many years later

Incredible! My small miracle recently. My mother is in hospice with dementia. Bed bound etc. saw her recently and she stared into my eyes. She reached out and grabbed my hand and squeezed it for a long time. I was getting tired :) She grabbed my forearm and did the same thing. Never happened before.

Tonight, while I was sitting with her in total silence, she said my name as clearly as I've heard her say it in over 10 years. She looked at me in my eyes and said my name again. She was there for only a few seconds, but she was there.

Beautiful! Bless the both of you!

Her soul is fine. She’s is inside you no matter what that evil disease has done. And she will be forever!

She gave you something you're never going to forget. Not complaining about the Disney trip, not bitching about your wife, just pure.

Alzheimer's/dementia is my biggest fear. I think I could handle just about any medical issue except that. Mad respect to those of you who take care of loved ones that suffer from it.

My mom suffered from Alzheimer's and as you mentioned, it was like being with a stranger every day.

Shortly before she had a stroke and then passed away my wife and I were in her room setting with her and she looked up, called both of us to her bedside using our names and then asked "are y'all doing okay, I mean really doing okay". We both told her yes, she then closed her eyes and never spoke again.

Yes, hold on to the memory of your miracle. When the time comes, don't be afraid to hold her hand and tell her it's okay to go be with Jesus.

Hold on to that moment. My dad is dealing with end-stage Parkinson's with his wife of over 30 years (they married when I was an adult, so calling her my stepmother seems silly), and it's breaking him up.

He would love to have one coherent, last moment with her. Instead, he is killing himself taking care of her.

Hey man, my wife's Mother went through the same thing. Hearing her stories about caring for her Mother is brutal. I'm genuinely happy for you that you were present for that moment. God bless you.

I get it.

Saw my mother yesterday and she asked who I was. I said my name and she repeated it with a smile.

We enjoy our little victories when we can get them.

My mother had intermittent flashes like that about two weeks before she died. With me, I wheeled her around the garden of her nursing home and she was able to name all the different kinds of flowers. With my dad, she had a conversation with him that he said was like old times. With her brother, she laughed at his corny jokes. After that, she became mostly unresponsive, went into a coma and died.

I thought she was getting better, but it was an end of life rally. It's well documented, but not well understood. I'm glad you had that with your mother.
