You chose rigidity and boundaries over creating opportunity through demonstrating value.

You do you, but I always look for ways to add value to the company. If they come to me to help somebody new I jump all over it because a) I’m being recognized as being at the top of the food chain from my peers and b) that new person will owe me and know I’m the shite.

Can do attitudes are required in today’s world. Nobody ever gets ahead with a “not my job” mentality when you are salaried.
If you have the time, why not do it?
If you are swamped, explain this to the boss.

Do you really care about this?

Because you've only proceeded to argue with anyone who has said 'yes'.

I am in a completely different department (same level), and the newly promoted Sr Manager has suggested to the CFO that I should be asked to assist with this project. I refused because a) It's no longer my job, and I am in another department, b) a Sr Manager should be able to figure out the project without assistance from another department. CFO is very upset that I refused to assist and says that my expectations for this new Sr Manager is unreasonable. I do not mind helping out once in a while; however, I have much higher expectations for those in a Sr Manager role. I have never asked for assistance from another department at this level.

bullshite. There's no such thing as "that's not my job". If you feel like you cannot handle it, then talk to the boss, but if the boss disagrees and says to do it, you do it.

Yes.

I survived, even thrived, in corporate settings by:

1. Being someone between needed information and end users. Knowing what others didn't and being viewed as "the go to guy" when they needed something.

2. Being a "Team Player" and chipping in, even if was "not my job". For years, I continued to produce reports and do projects for my prior team (kind of on the side, and it didn't impact my current role) because "I could" and "they" needed it and no one else would own it.

3. Being enthusiastic even about being pulled into crisis type projects from prior roles because "I was needed".

The more value you bring, the more longevity you can usually expect, not that layoffs and changes happen despite all of the above.

Not being resilient and a "team player" isn't a good look with the current environment of consolidations, layoffs, etc.

In every job I have had I never turned down a request to help someone be better at their job. Even when I wasn't fond of that person.

What did your boss say? If your doing other stuff, it impacts your department.

FYI-If your boss is good with it, do it. The pay is the same. If they sak me to empty the trash, I'm good with it. THE PAY IS THE SAME.

Amen:

I’ve had to handle plenty of situations or tasks that were arguably “below my station” because it was expedient and wise in the situation.

The boss doesn’t HAVE to do something’s but a wise boss will handle stuff in the moment, based on the situation.

That’s not what I said. What I said was that if you are legitimately too busy or too overloaded to do a job outside of your clearly defined job expectations you should push back.

And for the record, the OP outright refusing to help a new manager is NOT what I was talking about. But this idea that managers can keep asking more and more and more from the employees for free with the promise of “future reward” is bullshite and abusive.

Once and only once I was “gifted” a promotion to a position with more travel and more responsibility but my pay stayed the same. I was told, if you do a good job you’ll be remembered come annual performance pay raises. I received stellar marks for performance and growth and when our annual raises came out, I got the company average.

At that point I decided I will never take on more responsibility and work for “delayed promises” unless I get exactly what will be promised in writing.
