re: Just got my first text message from AJ McCarron for LT Governor

The "career politicians" trope is certainly true on the federal level. But running a state is a whole different ballgame. It requires a significantly higher understanding of the inner workings from an actual service perspective to be successful. Alabama is already deeply conservative and runs fairly lean and efficiently (where possible). One guy coming in trying to DOGE everything because thats what Trump did with the US govt, and another guy getting in through running on a platform of Nick Saban namedrops doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

Great. 2 dudes with zero experience or knowledge of how the state runs running the state. Can't wait.
I spend way too much time looking at the data from the robot test - it is very interesting how each ball with each club at each swing speed behaves.
The thing that I kinda value the most at this point is production quality and consistency. I can't remember where I read it, but they basically cut open a bunch of balls and found some fairly significant differences in consistency and weight distribution from a fair amount of balls in the same pack.
There is a reason why ProV1 is what everything else is measured against. Not saying its going to help me shoot 80 instead of 92, but i've been prone to slices and the lower spin rate of certain balls off the driver should no doubt help control that - if it turns what would have been a 50 yard off-line sliced lost ball into a 25 yard off line edge of the woods shot - that'd be helpful.

Forgive my lack of laundry knowledge. I hang all of my collared/buttoned shirts in my laundry room, never putting them in the dryer.
If i wash them in cold, I'll have better success getting them clean?

Thats interesting - didn't realize that and at least provides a little perspective.
Part of the conversation we'll be having is whether or not the grind for that specialty will be worth it. He wants to do Psychiatry - so @ least 3 years of residency. Trying to talk through the math of investment/return when compared to 'just' going to PA school.
We have family that is a higher up in a mental health type place that has told us that brand new psychiatrists are making over 200K during first year after residency.

Best Hot Weather Polo

I have spent a ton of money buying polos over the past few months, but only end up wearing a couple because of absolute garbage breathability.
Current favorite is a callaway opti-dri. it is just significantly more breathable than anything else I've bought and I only paid like $8 during a sale at academy.
Are these Peter Millar and other brands worth a try at those prices?
What is your current go-to polo?

Medical School Expenses

I've got a kid who has been pretty consistently on the "i want to be a doctor" train for a while and he most likely has the ability - academically and personally - to do so.
He's currently in high school, so we've got a few years before actual med school, but we're trying to start planning and getting our minds wrapped around a strategy of how much debt might be a reasonable amount to begin his professional life. We're fine with him having skin in the game and carrying some of that burden, but we don't want it to cripple him financially.
All I've ever heard is how expensive med school is - looking at tuition alone (not including living expenses) for 4 years is going to run around 140-150K. Does that sound right?
Anyone been in this boat and want to share their experiences?

Any color blind pilots?
Posted by meAnon on 7/2/25 at 2:01 pm
Evidently, requirements for becoming licensed changed somewhere around 2009 with folks who are color blind being able to pass a test showing they could appropriately identify the necessary colors. I didn't realize this was a thing.
Any of you a color blind pilot?

I've been pretty good, or at least serviceable fairly quickly at everything I've ever tried sports-wise.
Except for golf. Been playing exactly 1 year and shooting in the mid to high 90's on good days.
It was (and still is) frustrating but I did have to realize just how hard this game is. I want to and will continue to get better, but this game ain't just gonna give it to you because you played baseball and hit .390 in high school. Its obviously a much longer, slower grind toward better.

ALSO....I can't believe I'm having to defend her, because I don't think she's great - but, we have spent a ridiculous, disproportionate amount of time and resources on having to build new prisons and improve mental health. Both of which, if handled appropriately for the last 30 years, would not have needed this much attention.

If that were true, we would have taken one of the many opportunities that have been presented over the last few years and absolutely expanded Medicaid.

Have to respectfully disagree here sir. There are certainly things that I wish were better, but I think she's done a pretty good job keeping a good balance.
I am significantly concerned that the next governor could be a bull in china shop.

I get pristine condition balls from lostgolfballs.com
I was going to make a post about this -
I just ordered from them for the 1st time. Ordered 48 taylormade tour response in 'mint' (not pristine) condition. Of the 48, one had a pretty bad cut, and 5 others probably should have been graded a level lower than mint....but especially with the 20% off, felt like this was still a really, really good deal.
A little light betting in Biloxi / Ocean Springs
Posted by meAnon on 6/23/25 at 4:59 pm
Headed to Biloxi next weekend for a short getaway. Never been.
Is horse or greyhound racing still a thing? I get the sense that Biloxi is a gambling town....never been too into slots or table games - but dang I use to love going to the dog track and putting $2 bets on whichever dog pooped on the way to the starting gate.
Any other recs?

You chose rigidity and boundaries over creating opportunity through demonstrating value.
The stealth and the 3000gt were so bad arse in high school.
Its wild to think of what used to be considered fast, especially compared to mass produced cars today.

re: Doing well financially, but still living paycheck to paycheck
Posted by meAnon on 6/19/25 at 8:33 am to lsuconnman
Our household income is pretty healthy - but we still have absolutely set amounts for personal spending and groceries/household. Sometimes near the end of the month, we have moments that we feel a little squeezed, but we are fully aware that we likely made an impulse decision somewhere along the way. Either way, we don't dip into savings. We don't use a credit card to get us by. I reckon that could feel a little 'paycheck to paycheck' for this context.

I listened to a good podcast (Honestly w/ Bari Weiss - Naftali Bennett and Michael Oren) talking about this accepted fact - that they have stepped up their enrichment capabilities and pace at an exponential rate.
They are 100% on route to build weapons. I don't see how anyone would debate that at this point.
