What a pain in the arse purchasing a car has become.
I've purchased my last 4 cars online. It's never been easier. Plus, I'm not stuck shopping with my local dealer. My last 4 cars have come from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Cleburne.

The salesperson has been trained to go straight to payment and credit terms that they know nothing about the car, and when you ask a “ballpark” price they won’t give it to you unless you go in.
Sounds like you got a shitty salesman who didn't know his product.
And isn't there a requirement to have a window sticker on a new vehicle? That lets you know how the price was arrived at?

This is why I like carmax so much. I was able to go there and test drive 5 different vehicle, purchase one and drive off the lot in under 2 hours. If only traditional dealerships could operate the same.

Why don't you swing by Dallas, we have every lot full
Is this why I’m getting Dallas area car commercials in SW LA?

How can you call it easy when you have to drive to another state to pick the car up. Easy? It is harder than all other dealerships.
Why are you driving to another state? I just bought a car in Atlanta. Did everything by email and text. They delivered the car to my driveway and picked up the trade in and brought it back to Atlanta. Better prices on both the car and the trade than I got in Nola and Baton Rouge.
I've done this exact same process 3 times now over the last 7 years (wife, kids)

One Saturday I got on line at a dealership and found a (used) Nissan Sentra, low millage , in our price range, he liked the way it looked. Called and spoke to a young lady who was excited and invited us to come look at the car and test drive it.
We show up, no car. They try some bullshite about well someone came in and bought it between your phone call and you driving here (30 minutes).
bullshite
isn't what actually happened just that the online inventory probably wasn't updated and the person on the phone didnt actually check anything other than the same online inventory that you were checking?

Lane Pratley has a brand new pre-owned Hyundai he'd like to sell you.

He either has to wait a couple months for the car he wants Or Go to a different car brand
What brand does he want? I know there are wait times for Porsche, particularly SUVs, but I was not aware of lengthy wait times for other brands unless it’s customized.

You beta cucks need to embrace tormenting the salespeople.
I used that noun in order to better fit in here.

Most likely what happened is the poster initially talked to some internet person who has never even set foot inside the dealership. (Or possibly an AI)
All they would have is an internet database which is usually slow to update.
The salesman at the dealership might not have ever heard of the person coming in before then.
"It just sold" is probably just code for "it's online but it's not on the lot."

I remember going with my daddy to buy a new truck.. I was.. I guess a pre teen.. early teenager and my dad bitching about how it took up most of his Saturday. I remember being the salesman's office and him leaving for a little while then coming back. Leaving out of his office again then coming back and my dad saying something about how they don't make the process of buying a new vehicle easy on anyone.
I think when the salesman came back with paperwork there were some added on cost that he didn't mention then he would have to go ask his manager about everything which I learned on the way home that that was the game. The salesman tells you he could do it for one price to get you in their office because the chances of someone buying the vehicle goes up by a lot by simply getting you into their office. Then they get you to a point where you just want to get out of their so you agree to on a higher price than they originally told you... I am not sure if that was their strategy or not, but based on what I remember, buying a new vehicle wasn't a fun process at all.
I have a ramp van so the purchase process is different for me so I don't know what's it like today, but I would assume today the customer has more leverage. People can do a lot more research today than they were able to 30-35 years ago...

According to the sale manager(s) the sticker price is the starting point to determine the employee pricing and rebates so no. Two similar cars with similar stickers have different OTD prices. I’ve seen it twice so far.

Posted on 7/2/25 at 8:40 am to bleedsgarnet
It's the manufacturers fault. They can't build any that can get to showrooms.

Lmao. I called a dealership and guy we've bought cars from forever, told him I wanted X car and told him I'd give X amount of money for it and he delivered that bitch the house. I signed the paperwork and wired the money. Done in a day.
