Thanks man. I was told to try to avoid the cast if I could. My mother in law is one of the top PTs in CT and said I’ve got to do some intense PT.
It is on my driving foot too so how long am I looking for me to be able to drive again?

Ok here we go. I tore both in the past:
Tear 1. 42 years old..complete tear, left leg, about 3" above the heal. Surgery, 2wks in a cast, then 2-4 weeks in a boot, then 6-8 wks pt.
Tear 2. 55 years old..80% tear,,same location ,right leg this time. No surgery, boot for several weeks, with adjustable heal,,did PT at home,,lots of just walking and using bands to stretch it. 90 days all mostly good. 6months running lightly again. Tore both playing Basketball. Good luck.

Recovery takes awhile. Make sure you go to a go PT once you can begin physical therapy. Also I would do the surgery as soon as possible. I had a horrible experience with it, I managed to get a blood clot 3 weeks in and had to have the cast removed and get on blood thinners and then Had a partial rerupture that set me back quite a bit and swole up the back of my heel like a balloon. It’s still not 100% or even 90% 2 years later but I can play ball again and run. It is a long, monotonous journey with a lot of plateaus that are frustrating. Also, when they say stay off of it, stay off of it. Rent a knee scooter ASAP, screw the crutches. Makes a world of difference getting around.

My friend tore his(how??? we still don't know)...was back to normal in 4 months... he doesn't run or exercise( before or after)... but as far as walking around he was alright... didn't even do much physical therapy

If you truly ripped it through get surgery as fast as possible and start rehab

Get on Amazon and buy a good knee scooter. The med supply shops rent them, but you’ll probably need it long enough to warrant a purchase. They’re less than $200.
You can sell it later or, like us, loan it out to friends who find themselves in need. Ours is being ridden by a guy with a busted Achilles right now.

You should hit up Kevin Durant on instagram and maybe Tom Rinaldi will do a feel good story about y’all sitting side by side in hospital beds.

You'll never be the same again. Especially at 32 with this type of injury.

To be clear, there is a major difference in a tear versus a rupture. I also experienced a tear. It healed up in about 2 months with no surgery. If it is only slightly torn it is usually associated with a "calf strain" and can heal fairly quickly (a 3-4 weeks).
A full blown rupture should require surgery unless I am misinformed.
As for driving...with a full blown rupture, it could be a couple of months. My tear was in my left leg, and I am right footed, so I can't honestly say. Besides, my truck was a standard at the time, so driving was going to be a challenge no matter what. I would plan on 2-3 months of not driving and 9 months for total rehab. If it works out more quickly...cool beans. For your sake, I hope that you heal fast.

Did you ask the doctor about the peg leg option?
Also hear there are some nice retirement communities in Florida so you may want to start looking with this injury.

I didn't suffer a tear but I had to have my Achilles cut from the back of my heel in order for a bone spur to be ground down. The tendon was so calcified at the base of it that nearly 3/4" had to be removed and a portion of a tendon that runs under my foot to my big toe had to be cut from there and attached to my Achilles to repair it.
I was out of work for 3.5 months. Not sure how much a tear would change the recovery time.

Tore both and like a dummy didn’t seek medical attention until the second. This was the early 90’s and surgery and recovery was a year for each. I opted for PT because I just couldn’t do that 2 year crap. Healing process took years and I’m left with knots on the back of each foot that eat the shite out of socks and any shoes with lining.
