re: Hurricane Andrew 1992 - 34 years ago Monday morning (FL) through Wednesday morning (LA)

Someone I know well is named Andrew.

He had a framed front page copy of the T-P headline from the day it made landfall in S Florida:

“Millions Flee Andrew’s Wrath”

Was 8 when it hit in Thibodaux. Remember helping my dad board up the windows and also helping some neighbors board up as well. Our cat, who was the prettiest cat i've ever had and we've had a few over the years, didn't know what to do and decided to go hide under the engine in the car later in the day and when my dad went to leave to go help another neighbor board up the cat got cut up by the fan. Still remember seeing it wobble into the vacant lot next door bleeding from his head. Couldnt' get the vet to come help as he was obviously busy like everyone else and ole Boots died about an hour later.

I remember getting up in the middle of the night and my dad was in the living room, i'm sure nervous as hell about his home, somethign i understand now as an adult with a home. Felt like the house was breathing, like it was inhaling and exhaling. Felt very creepy and like the house was going to implode or something. Dad opened the door under the carport and definitely felt the difference like the house was able to relax, although it was pretty crazy outside at that point, and the power was out so it was really dark outside. A tornado hit 2 streets behind us and uprooted a huge oak tree that fell right on a couples bedroom and onto their bed. Had they not been up and in the living room they'd likely have been killed. I don't think anyone's fence around us made it through unscathed.
When we finally got to go outside in the morning i just remember debris being everywhere, like a bomb went off. We didn't have electricity for a good 2 weeks b/c of that little tornado knocking down a bunch of powerlines. I do recall the neighbors across the street from us had an small aluminum shed, and we found it a couple hundred yards into the cane fields behind their house.

I spent 1970-1992 in EBRP, and moved to Alexandria in August 1992, and Andrew is the first hurricane I remember. Weird. Surely there were others to hit LA after Camille, before Andrew.

Read up on Edith in 1971. If that storm happened today it would garner a 200+ page hurricane thread. It was "only a Cat. 2" when it eventually made landfall in LA, but it's life before that would have had most of the OT on guard for half a month.

Was a senior at Nicholls but living/working in Morgan City. It was amazing how many trees and utility lines went down and damage to roofs/structures that had to be seen to be believed. I think Nicholls was closed for a couple weeks and it was at least 10 days before power got restored in Mc

I was 12 and we were living south of Houma. Definitely the worst hurricane experience o have been through possibly because of my age at the time. . You could hear the walls moving and flexing. We were out of power for over two weeks. Can remember driving down to cocodrie after and seeing a warf hanging out the side of the Lumcon windows.

I was 8 in Thibodaux. My parents made us sleep in the hallway and years later found out they gave us Benadryl so we’d sleep through the worst part, ha!
Not much house damage other than the roof and general outside cleanup.
It took a day to get used to sleeping with no ac, but still had fun. I recall in the canals by the house, the choupique came out of the swamp and were stacked up near the road. We assumed the foliage in the water starved the water of o2 so they went to a less wooded area. We caught and fried plenty of fish that week. The whole neighborhood was out. Was a lot of fun as a kid.

I was 21 and living in Slidell. We had a party but hardly anything was open. So we got Popeyes and rented a porn movie called Return To Camp Beaver Lake 2 starring Ron Jeremy. The girls pretended to be outraged but watched it with us for the 5 minutes it was on. It worked out for me. I got laid. I had to work at this one because 3 years earlier I had dumped the girl as my prom date for another girl 2 weeks before the dance. It was a dick move and she was still pissed at me. But my persistence paid off and finally closed the deal at 5 in the morning. And in my buddies little brothers bunk bed no less. Good memories about that hurricane!

I went to the nudie bar in Carencro that night. Sophomore at USL. Woke up to power out and classes cancelled. Got someone with LSP on phone and found out I-10 was open to BR, so I went home to Central. Got there to a cold house, as we only lost power for a couple hours, while the rest of BR was out for 2 weeks. Had a lot of friends \ family come through for a hot meal or shower .
