County Line Sonic Shooting

Last time two baws met at that Sonic...

Born and raised in Huntsville (Madison) and it suffers from people thinking their opinion of Huntsville from the mid-late 2000s is still relevant. It is growing quickly and has changed significantly in the last five years. Growing up, I never wanted to live in Huntsville and I still don't want to at my age (mid-20s). However, it is a great place to live when you're ready to settle down. Real estate is relatively cheap (this is changing), there are a ton of great "chill" places to get drinks (Campus 805 is a fairly novel "adult playground"), and it has easy access to a lot of other areas (1.5 hr to Nashville, 1.5 hr to Birmingham, 4 hours to ATL, similar times to Memphis and Chattanooga).

It is definitely a small city compared to Atlanta, Nashville, Nola, etc. but if we're comparing it to comparable cities in other states, I'd say Huntsville and Chattanooga are significantly better than the competition (Lafayette, Shreveport, BR, Augusta GA, Jackson MS).

It is overhyped. Redstone is the primary economic engine. You will have to travel to Bham or Nashville for activities.

What activities do you have to travel to Bham or Nashville that you can't get in Huntsville, outside of pro sports in Nashville?

Between Campus 805, Five Points, Lowe Mill, Von Braun, the miles of greenway, hiking trails within the city limits on Monte Sano, the Tennessee river...I can keep going on and on...there's a metric shite-ton of "activities" for pretty much everyone.

It always blows my mind that in 1950, Athens was bigger than Huntsville.

Best school system is Madison City, but Huntsville, Decatur and Athens also have good schools.

I remember when it was nothing but fields off of Lindsay Lane. I'd almost claim it as my 'home course' but I played too much at Athens Country Club for that to be true.

I remember that well because when we moved there in 1987 my parents bought a house in Indian Trace. We used to play in those fields.

Southwest really screwed HSV over. It had the highest average airfare for years and years, thanks to so much government/contractor traffic, but it was still reasonable to fly out of as long as you bought your ticket far enough in advance.

Then Southwest bought AirTran and shut them down, leaving Delta with the only true mainline service to HSV (American has an MD-82 every now and then, or at least they used to). That really caused fares to go up. And with Southwest at BNA and BHM, they're never flying to HSV.

interesting. Actually United makes a couple of direct flights a day from Houston to Huntsville. I've been taking that flight (as opposed to HOU-BNA on SW) when visiting my son at Sewanee.

Actually took an American (with connection in DFW) a few weeks ago that was all of $50 one-way.

I live in Hazel Green but figured he didn't know where that was. Work in Huntsville in land development.

Well said. It’s for this reason I’m not sure if I will ever leave Texas, even though I spend a lot of time talking about leaving

I don’t think this same convo is had often about Texas because that state is in great shape and has a bright future unlike many other states nearby. There’s always that idea of wanting out of your home state to do your own thing.

Any Texan who chooses to come to Louisiana, Arkansas or Mississippi just to start a life is out of their mind. But leaving Texas for states like Tennessee, Georgia or North Carolina is something I can understand.

Agreed. I grew up over in the sticks on sand mountain, but I've lived in Huntsville/Madison since around 2000. It has changed a lot in that time frame. The beer/food/art/entertainment scene has really grown, along with the booming tech/military industry. It's not Nashville, or Atlanta, but I'd rather live here than those cities, or any other area of Alabama.

So far Huntsville isn’t bad, I found a place in the Five Points area. I plan to do a little hiking and sight seeing this weekend. Anyone recommend a good spot to watch the game this weekend?

Old co-worker is one of the city engineers there. He loves it. That area is beautiful. Wouldn't hesitate moving there.

Check out Drake's off Airport/Whitesburg. Not a bad place to get some decent food and drinks.

It’s not as bad as others are suggesting. As long as you don’t mind being around, great places to fish, good hunting areas, only a few hours from fun larger cities, low/no traffic, pretty good schools, educated people, good weather, high employment rates and people that make well above the household average for most of the south you will be fine. The one surprising thing to me when I go there is the lack of great restaurants. Other than that, it’s not bad at all.

Assuming you are an engineer?

Good for you. Five Points area has a lot remodeling going on. Are you close to the bottom of Monte Sano?

Did they resume construction? I saw where they had halted over an endangered fish.

Also how long of a drive to Chattanooga from Huntsville?

About 2 hours, just about to make the drive myself. I have a dislike for North Alabama.

I don't have a high opinion of Huntsville. It's just another bland Alabama town to me. You could do a lot worse though.

They have a Top Golf. I know this board loves that shite.

I live in apartments over in Jones Valley and will be searching for a house in Hampton Cove in the south side of Huntsville. Love the area.

Go eat at 1892 East if you haven't already. Great food, great craft beer selection, and not pretentious at all.
