They have differences in culture. Wouldn’t expect a simpleton like you to get it

Is that another way of saying it doesn’t have “demographics” holding the region back?

Because that’s what most of the Deep South has and it hurts us IMO. Especially Louisiana and Mississippi if you catch my drift

That's part of, but not entirely, what I meant. It really does feel like the Valley is more a part of TN than AL, excepting football allegiance.

Most of the best and brightest have left Louisiana and Mississippi for other states I think

That’s a fact.

Texas poaches our best college grads on a regular basis like it’s nothing. The amount of LA natives in Houston alone is probably off the charts.

Yeah that’s a good thing. It’s definitly got a lot going for it moving foward. Unlike a majority of the south. I can’t think of any Deep South cities that are in that same light.

The new south is taking over.

The brain drain America exercises on the rest of the world applies just as much internally. Skilled, competent, and intelligent people don't stay around their hometown - they go off in search of 'cool' places where they can make money.

It's a damn, dirty shame. The people who bitch and denigrate about 'flyover country' are likely from there and have done nothing to improve the place that produced them.

You can’t blame the people for choosing to not stick around because most of the time it’s not like they have a choice. The options are limited in most of these places.

Blame that state’s government for not being able to bring in jobs and/or quality of life that makes staying in your home state more attractive. When you can’t trust the public schools, the roads and your tax dollars you know all signs are pointing at the door. People shouldn’t have to settle for that. They should start a life somewhere that their kids can live a good life.

That's exactly what I'm saying - those who could actually make positive change choose to go elsewhere, though I understand the reasoning. It requires a significant amount of personal sacrifice to forego better opportunities - to use the old adage, it's planting trees whose shade you'll never see.

Well said. It’s for this reason I’m not sure if I will ever leave Texas, even though I spend a lot of time talking about leaving

I did it. And I still may end up being guilty of it in the future. It's a hard thing to contend with, especially if you are a cynic.

One day all of America’s brightest will live in one city, and wonder what happened to the rest of the country.

It is taking its form in south Texas. My family lived within 100 miles from the border just 2 generations ago, and now, nobody under the age of 40 in my family (and most of their friends they grew up with) would consider living anywhere south of San Antonio. My grandkids will probably never be willing to live south of Dallas. There will be nowhere left to go.

Born and raised in Huntsville.

Awesome area to be if you have kids. Bob Jones High School in Madison is rated as the #3 high school in the state. James Clemens which is also in Madison is rated 5th. Grissom in Huntsville is rated #16 and Huntsville High is rated #21.

Huntsville isn't the best place for entertainment, but you are only 1.5 hours from Birmingham and Nashville and about 3.5 to 4 hours from Memphis and Atlanta.

The job market is incredible and unemployment is super low. With Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Flight Center located in Huntsville there are ~600 defense contractors with offices in the area. If a person can't find a good job in Huntsville there is something wrong with them.
