re: How much of a scam is the dentist?

You started off by saying you haven't been to the dentist in ten years then proceeded to bitch about all the things the dentist says need to be done.
Because it felt exactly the same as going to a mechanic to get a new tire and they sell you on that you must have new break pads, caliper, lug nuts and 3 different belts.

The industry is dying and getting taken over by PE. People's teeth are in fine health these days due to advances in habit and regular teeth cleanings. The genius business guys are thinking of ways to pump money into the profession by making up bogus charges and selling things you don't need. That being said, X-rays are part of your annual check up already paid by your insurance premiums. You also skipped the dentist for 10 years and are questioning the need of a 2 visit deep cleaning?

If you just get your visible teeth polished, but leave all the bacteria below your gums to continue to rot and spread infection, did you really get your teeth cleaned?
Would you ask for topical neosporin after being diagnosed with sepsis?

The pockets in your gums hold onto plaque and can cause bone loss. Insurance won’t cover it unless you already have bone loss. If you’re not tight on money it’s probably worthwhile.

I can’t even do that. I have to go get X-rays and an exam before they will schedule my cleaning. After 2 doctors and a hygienist are in my mouth I’m told everything looks good, no cavities but you need a deep cleaning. Will take 2 visits and you will need to be numbed.
No reason this should take 3 visits. You're getting ripped off. This can all be done in one visit and like 90 minutes

Dentists: not a scam
Dental insurance when you need anything more than the most minimal stuff: HUGE SCAM

We found the dentist here. I would have handled the deep cleaning and been ok with it if the doctor at the last minute didn’t push the wisdom teeth referral. That was the straw that broke the camels back and proved to me they were trying to fleece me because I told them “I haven’t been in a decade”. They thought I was the biggest mark they had ever seen.

I had one dentist a few years ago get mad when I said no to all her add-ons while i was in the chair before she started poking around. My mouth was stabbed repeatedly. Needless to say, never went back to her.

Dentist isn't a scam.
Dental insurance is.
Dental insurance is.

agree. They both do things that the average person can't or won't do and help your stuff (mouth/vehicle) operate at its best and identify any major frickups prior to them turning into actual emergencies.
I'm thankful for both.

This is what I’m starting to figure out.
Your mouth is a lot like a car, if you fail to perform proper maintenance, it will start to break down and cost you more.

I had a good dentist who retired. Would tell you that you had some time on a cavity if you weren't ready and never used the word deep cleaning. Granted, I've gone twice a year for a long time. He retired and went to one that was "family owned" except they weren't. Stay away from corporately owned dentists. They will drill and take more of your natural teeth than is needed.

The last two dental plans I have been on have been hugely disappointing.
Our "health" insurance plan is HDHP, so we have a HSA. I use the HSA to self insure for dental work. Best insurance I have ever had. lol.

Even with the best teeth brushing habits you’re gonna have a lot of plaque that has to be scraped off. That takes time and can be painful so I can see why they’d recommend the two visits.

Dental care is not expensive. Dental neglect is expensive.
I get that you’re upset with a sudden blow to your pocketbook. That always sucks. But maybe there was some sort of way you could have mitigated that over the last 10 years?

If not an outright scam definitely scammy. Dentists charge whatever they know they can milk your insurance for. Just today, a colleague was bitching that her dentist office wouldn't tell her exactly how much her cleaning was going to be. ("It depends.") Yeah, depends how much they can milk her particular insurance for.
When I lived out of state, I had a dentist do a full x-ray scan on me. When I moved to another state shortly after and visited another dentist, he refused to request the x-rays like any other medical professional would and ordered an all new set instead.

How hard is it to even clean teeth these days, they all use the water jet thingy anyway. The hardly even break out a scraping tool to remove plaque from my teeth.
If they aren’t even using the tool, I’d switch to a new dentist if I were you.

Ole Miss fan...checks out.
I guess it turns out that Skip wasn't wrong about the toothbrush being invented in Mississippi.

As much as any doctor, insurance agent, or financial advisor if you go in blindly and believe the bullshite they’re trying to sell with no personal knowledge of your beliefs.
