I can’t even do that. I have to go get X-rays and an exam before they will schedule my cleaning.

Wut?? Thats stupid. That would be the last I stepped foot in there.

My dentist does an outstanding job. Quick X-ray, hygienist cleaning, then an exam. If teeth has been ok.. can even decline the X-ray and he's okay with it. Quick in and out on routine visits.

last minute didn’t push the wisdom teeth referral

He referred it out. How does that immediately benefit him at all? Plus, a monkey could see an impacted wisdom tooth. Did OP disagree with that diagnosis?

You can.

It’s just like tipping. You can say no.

Gross.

Last time I went, it had been about a decade since my previous visit, and the dentist told me my teeth looked great. Only reason I went there is because I had a 20-year-old filling fail and my tooth basically broke in half. They put a crown on it and I haven't been back since. That was 3 years ago. I brush morning and night and floss daily. If you have good dental hygiene then you don't necessarily need a professional to regularly clean your teeth. I'd say that it's gross if you consistently have plaque on your teeth that requires professional cleaning. In that case then you might need to improve your personal hygiene habits.

Liability. If they simply just cleaned and later you came back with an issue they could have easily caught with basic screening, they might be open to litigation. They are protecting themselves, and also you, from your own ignorance. As far as deep cleaning, some do need it if there is significant build-up from a decade of no professional cleanings.

a deep cleaning. Will take 2 visits and you will need to be numbed. That will cost you $450.

Huge scam. The scam is big enough for them to retire 10-15 years after they get out of dental school.

I haven't been to a dentist since I was 18 years old. I brush twice a day and floss all the time. Never had a cavity. Can't even remember having a toothache so I just have never had a reason to go. I guess once I get old and they start falling out, I'll start going again.

Just an FYI that

quote:

I’m told everything looks good

and

quote:

you need a deep cleaning.

Are mutually exclusive. And that second part is almost certainly because

quote:

haven’t been in a decade.

Hope that helps.

Does it make a high pitch whine when running? If so that is the scraping tool.

I think that cleanings every 6 months and x-rays every year if there are no issues is borderline criminal, but not so much that I just wouldn't go. At the end of the day, it's about $300-350/year if you don't have insurance. It's just something you should do as an adult, just like yearly physicals, colonoscopies and dermatologist appointments. If your teeth were rotting out of your head and all needed to be pulled, you might feel different.

Dentists don’t give a shite how clean your teeth are. He told you this because he’s lazy and didn’t want to clean them himself

That deep cleaning they're talking about is not fun, from what I've heard. Have a buddy who needed to have it done and he also had it done over two visits. They're essentially jamming tools way up under your gum line and scraping bad shite out. And once you have gum disease you may need to have that done somewhat regularly. Best to avoid it by going to the dentist for regular cleanings (which are covered pretty much completely) and avoiding the pain and expense of neglect.

if it's covered there's no reason to not get the X-rays. I just went for my 6 month cleaning yesterday and wasn't eligible for x-rays so we didn't do them.

That's the drill for a cavity. The scraper/plaque remover is just a metal tool that they use.

It’s because you have gum problems now. Separate from your teeth.

The doctor said it wasn’t a problem now but would be “soon”. Probably gets a few grand just for a referral that leads to a surgery. Aka - scam

It has been 10 years? You have missed 20 routine cleanings in that time frame. Needing a deep cleaning would not be abnormal at all.

If a x-ray showed a wisdom tooth leaning into an adjacent tooth, it would be normal for the dentist to advise to have it removed.
