Yeah, they have a solid plan...wait ten years to scam you out of 400 bucks, after a decade of neglect

I am good friend with my long term orthodontist. He describe the greatest contributor to cost is liability insurance. More than his personnel income. In fact he described , some in the dentists world will work for several days per month in Progresso Mexico because they can make more money there with out the US liabilities

I went to a different than my usual dentist Smile Texas because I was thinking about getting Lumineers. They were advertising specials on them. I never went through with it but when they examined my teeth they told me I needed a deep cleaning and suggested laser which my insurance didn’t cover. I said no thanks at the time and went to my regular dentist to see a periodontist and she said there was nothing wrong and I didn’t need that. So YES you have to beware I’ve had that happen other times and got a second opinion that contradicted the others.

I think it depends on who you go to. My dentist of 40 years retired a couple years ago. Never had any problems while I was seeing him. A couple young guys took over his practice and, of course, on the first visit I had a "cavity."
Got it fixed and the next time I went they found another. I said, forget this, and went and found another old school dentist. Told me my teeth were perfect, and he's much less expensive.
They must be teaching these newer dentists how to fleece the patient.

Depends on the particular dentist. My dentist retired about two years ago, so for the convenience, I want to Aspen dentist. They checked me over and told me I had gum disease that needed to be urgently treated. They checked me treatment would cost $15,000 and pressured me to sign the agreement while I was still sitting in the chair. Of course I didn’t sign the agreement.
I then got an appointment with a local dentist for a second opinion. He got kind of pissed when he was examining me. Then he told me he saw no sign of gum disease.
My only regret is that I didn’t put Aspen on the news that night.

I haven’t been in a decade. Decided I’m paying for insurance I’ll go get a cleaning. I can’t even do that. I have to go get X-rays and an exam before they will schedule my cleaning. After 2 doctors and a hygienist are in my mouth I’m told everything looks good, no cavities but you need a deep cleaning. Will take 2 visits and you will need to be numbed. That will cost you $450. Also your wisdom teeth might start hitting another tooth here is your referral to get them all out.
Why can’t I just get my damn cleaning and move in if nothing hurts and I have no cavities?
No dentist in ten years + no cavities + all of your wisdom teeth?
Unfortunately for me, all of my wisdom teeth were pulled, and four molars have cracked (crowned - I still have all of my molars that are not wisdom teeth), I just got a molar crowned last month. Good times.

Technically you get two sets of teeth.

problem with dentists is that crappy work may take years to show up. sloppy crowns will decay but it takes time. and then the patient really may not think to blame the one who did it.
it's also hard for the average Joe to recognize poor work or poor case mgmt.
got an Ortho locally that loves to put braces on adults with a mouth full of decaying and or loose teeth.

We found the dentist here. I would have handled the deep cleaning and been ok with it if the doctor at the last minute didn’t push the wisdom teeth referral. That was the straw that broke the camels back and proved to me they were trying to fleece me because I told them “I haven’t been in a decade”. They thought I was the biggest mark they had ever seen.

I can top this. I went to the dentist last year just for the heck of it. Hadn't been in probably 23 years.
Hygienist cleaned my teeth and all looked good. Clean bill of health from the dentist. No X-rays or other crap. On my way out they tried to schedule me for a 6 month checkup. I said nah I'll let you know.
Maybe in another 23 years.
OP, find another dentist.

Even with the best teeth brushing habits you’re gonna have a lot of plaque that has to be scraped off. That takes time and can be painful so I can see why they’d recommend the two visits
