Ceiling fans create a windchill effect. Running an ac with an oversized blower creates a humid environment even while reaching the set temperature. Proper cfm is required to remove humidity from a space.

2500 SF living running a 4 ton unit with a air mover sized for 4.5 tons and the thermostat is rarely set below 75F.

Just had to have my contactor and a blown fuse replaced Saturday was 71 in the house took almost 8 hrs to cool down

My bad…I didn’t know you had replied. Could be many things but it’s not the brand of ac that’s your problem. You could put the exact same tonnage using another brand and you’ll still be in the same boat. I certainly don’t know your system situation though. I have no idea if it was sized and installed correctly. Was it ever working to your satisfaction when it was blazing hot? Are you properly maintaining the entire system? Do you have leaky ductwork, bad insulation, leaky windows, dirty coils, etc.? My point is it could be a lot of things including something actually wrong with the system. Have you had it checked? If that system is running top notch, sized properly and installed correctly, then you need to tighten up the home.

Got to be careful where you try to use these. Ask your AC man, or a local electrician, how good the electrical supply is. Our local co-op provides cheap power, but it’s dirty. They give those VFDs(inverters) hell. You’re also creating a more expensive failure point as opposed to a capacitor. Do the math on how much you could save in power vs the extra expense of the higher seer unit. It’s generally not worth the cost.

Mine has no chance when it’s 96 outside. So we have it programmed to start blasting at 5am, then give it a short break before it runs all day.

TLDR: all of what you said except coils, most likely. Looking for reputable company to overhaul all next year. Making list of company names to contact as I see people make recommendations on this forum.

Thank you. Coils recently cleaned and it was working well until this heat wave of last 2 weeks. A friend cleaned them and said looks like they’d never been cleaned. Unfortunate, because I paid my air company 2x to clean them as I have dogs and kept up with it. He said they lied saying they cleaned.
I think it’s insulation, attic heat and duct issues. Friends have same issue and says it’s bc our homes likely aren’t insulated well. That the heat/sun beat down on roof and brick all day. About 6 pm the temp rises a degree and doesn’t start falling until 9/10 pm. I’m making a list of companies to do an overhaul next year as I need a new furnace. So will possibly replace 6 year old air handler / condenser, too, and want someone to check insulation, attic, ducts, and do a manual J. Problem is finding someone trustworthy. Not looking for cheap. Looking for quality. I had to terminate my air company after they joined under a PE umbrella with a lot of other companies . So I’m making a list of names to call as I see recommendations made.

I live north of Oklahoma City. House is 2300 sqft, single story.
I had a new Goodman 4-ton unit installed 12 years ago. 10-year warranty. One of the guys I played golf with did the job and got me a good deal. He has since passed away.
July 5th (Sunday), I noticed it was no longer cooling the house, and we had grandkids scheduled to visit the following weekend. Called a local guy who was recommended by neighbors on Monday morning. I had used him a year prior to fix a problem with by condensation line, and he barely even charged me for the work ($125). This time, he said all I needed was a pound and a half of freon, which he took care of for $250. Another good deal.
Then, on Tuesday, it stopped cooling again. Hottest day of the year so far (104 degrees). We sweated it out that night. The house got up to 85.
Wednesday morning, I noticed that the breaker was blown. I tried resetting it to no avail. I even removed the bus-bar outside and checked the voltage. Everything OK, but as soon as I reinserted the bus-bar, the breaker would blow again.
Called my guy. His old man came over, checked it out, and said the compressor has shorted to ground.
My two options:
New compressor (if they could find one) for $3000 and a 1-year warranty, or completely new 5-ton Carrier system with 10-year warranty for $8500.
I opted for the latter and they showed up first thing Thursday morning and changed it out.
Back in the spring time my mother, who lives in Tulsa, got a quote to replace hers that was for $12K, and her house is much smaller than mine. I talked her out of it since hers is still working just fine. But it also makes me think that the $8500 that I paid was a good deal.
Any opinions from you HVAC experts? Is $8500 a good price for a brand new 5-ton Carrier heat pump with an attic-mounted blower?

May want to consider a home energy audit. They can pinpoint energy loss issues without breaking the bank and you may be able to get rebates/incentives to offset the cost. Just a thought. Check with your energy company…they may have really good incentives to do so.

Well, you didn’t get gouged and that’s what is important. Obviously, all they did was replace the equipment and no ductwork. Probably doubled their cost and called it a good day. Many others out there would have taken advantage of summer and you. Keep that person’s number handy. They’re a rarity in the HVAC world.

My POS 7 year old Trane that’s on coil number 4 is working like a dog. I’m not looking forward to having to replace it but I am looking forward to taking it to the caliche pit and filling it with tannerite.

My youngest was an infant/toddler during Gustav. No power for 8 days and my wife wouldn't leave because I couldn't. It sucked putting her in that crib in a diaper knowing she'd be hot.
We become different when we have kids.
