Just had all my ducts replaced. Definitely eased the load. They were in bad shape.

Thanks. I live in on a rural golf course, and they are a family business that several of my neighbors recommended. Old man - gotta be around 75 - came out and checked everything out. He has two sons that run crews, and his daughter handles answering the phones and taking care of the office work.
I don't have any "buyer's remorse" although I just retired a year ago and certainly did not want to have to spend that much money right off the bat.

Fine but I don't set it in the 60's. We live in South Louisiana, I think we have to learn to acclimate to the heat to some extent - central air has made us pretty soft and spoiled.

In Baton Rouge LA it would be - great price. I paid $5K more than that 3 years ago for a 4-ton single stage Trane, 4 bids (Trane or Carrier units) - all small (2 man operation, owner & helper) or medium (several trucks) size companies, all 4 bids were within $1K of each other.

Walked into 89 degree house yesterday after being out of town for a week and half. Had a local company come out yesterday evening since they were close by, 17k for a comparable unit, 20k for a top of the line system, can install tomorrow. It was all I could do to keep from laughing at him. Had someone I know come out this morning, Carrier is going to warranty the leaking condenser, couldn't find anything wrong with the compressor that was supposedly bad. $2,300 bucks for labor and equipment, only bad part, the parts are 4 days or so out. Headed to our place at the coast, it has a brand new unit that went out 3 weeks ago, $8,000 for it. Have to go anyway to meet insurance adjuster after finding a leaking roof down there a couple weeks back. FML

71 during the day and 68 at night. If this becomes untenable, I'll move to Northern Idaho, but I'm perfectly fine with paying the bill for keeping it where I want otherwise.

Just cleaned the outside unit last night and it's cooling much better now. Last cleaned the coils back in late April and I was surprised by the amount stuff the Nu-Calgon mix pulled out after only 3 months. The unit was running almost non stop and now gives itself a break more often. Definitely lowered the head pressure as the compressor is much quieter now.

Absolutely, your money to spend how you want. Don't mean central air hasn't turned us soft and spoiled, it just means we have the money and don't care if we are soft and spoiled.

I've had to explain this many times, my fiancee's mother was convinced that the blowers weren't running fast enough to cool the house and that they needed to be upgraded. The main system is practically brand new with a variable speed blower already, think it's moving a bit over 1060 CFM for the 3-ton condenser and the condensation that system is moving out of the house is significant. She leaves the kitchen window open every time she smokes and there's a sliding door in the back she leaves open to the enclosed patio...
