Since the 90s, Tokyo has held more wealth than any city in the world. But their economy still struggles.

What is going on? What did we do different that has caused us to thrive?

Japan’s "Lost Decade" (or Lost Decades) refers to an extended period of economic stagnation sparked by the collapse of the Japanese asset price bubble in the early 1990s. Characterized by stock market crashes, entrenched deflation, and zero-growth policies, the era ultimately stretched over 30 years as the economy struggled to recover.
This is why.

The Lost Decades crushed them economically.
quote:

In the 1980s, Japan's export-driven economy boomed, leading to massive trade surpluses with the U.S. and a reputation as the world's most formidable economic power. Following the 1985 Plaza Agreement, Japan implemented loose monetary policies that led to extreme speculation in real estate and the stock market. By 1989, the Nikkei 225 index reached nearly 39,000. When the Bank of Japan raised interest rates to cool the market in 1990, the bubble burst. Land and stock prices plummeted, wiping out billions in wealth and leaving banks with massive portfolios of bad, unrecoverable loans.

Because there’s way more to Japan than just Tokyo.

It is funny watching 80s movies and you hear the occasional “The Japanese are going to own us” line. Sounds just like the China commentary since 2009

You could add some metrics to explain where Japan has struggled and make this a useful thread.

Japan's economy is strongly tied to the world energy market, Minimum natural oil/gas produced internally, and shut in Nuclear generation following earth quake disaster.

Strongly tied to export market for machinery type stuff which was facing increasingly competitive Start ups from other asian suppliers.

Population declining births, leads to an aging workforce, that strict immigration controls affect.

I lived there with my family for a year and thought it was a pretty nice environment

Japan is still a wonderful place. Clean, safe, most polite people on Earth, tons of entertainment, incredible food, skiing in the mountains, beaches, etc.

They just made some big mistakes with their economic policies and other policies and the world competition for their exports expanded.

Large economy but virtually no growth and an aging population.

Prob political corruption. Just look at Louisiana and all the natural resources it has (MS River, oil, etc) yet it’s a cesspool of poverty compared to the rest of the country.

During the 1970s and 1980s Japan made some wonderful 35mm cameras

and electronics. Stuff like Canon, Olympus, and Nikons.

Sony ,Pioneer, and Yamaha.

Then Sony bought some of Hollywood and caught cancer.
