Hospitals are threatening to fire health-care workers who publicize their working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic -- and have in some cases followed through.

Ming Lin, an emergency room physician in Washington state, said he was told Friday he was out of a job because he’d given an interview to a newspaper about a Facebook post detailing what he believed to be inadequate protective equipment and testing.

In Chicago, a nurse was fired after emailing colleagues that she wanted to wear a more protective mask while on duty. In New York, the NYU Langone Health system has warned employees they could be terminated if they talk to the media without authorization.

Gordon fixin’ to try to get it done... by taking these cases and farming them out to firms that can actually litigate.

If I were a doctor there I'd immediately speak out about it and call an attorney the minute I was fired.

Politicize a crisis through fear mongering, is what you meant to say instead of “speak of lack of gear”.

Liar, liar.....you get fired.....

Firing Dr.'s during a National Emergency, brilliant but unorthodox move! This will provide new Dr.'s with job opportunities during this high unemployment time!

We'll soon be rid of so many more DimProgFilth this way! I condone it!

Maybe they should do their job without the dramatics.

So she had one she just didn’t feel safe enough?

Also, most jobs have written in contracts that you cannot give interviews about company business unless authorized.

Well that would certainly qualify as a wrongful termination claim. And the employee would win.

Good. They’re replaceable same as everyone else. Their attention seeking behavior is a danger to the operations of the hospital.

Threats are being made in Baton Rouge hospitals at this time. Physicians and nurses are being ordered not to wear even surgical masks unless they are in very specific situations. However, in a hospital setting, every situation is a potential infection situation.

I understand the lack of PPE for hospital works is terrible.

But honestly at this point every knows it is a problem. They are pointing fingers left and right saying people arent doing enough.

However we know there is a massive shortage all over the world. I'm assuming their leadership has mentioned that to them. Why is every news story written as hospital workers vs administration?

I mean if they could get ppe they would. It literally has to be made first

exactly. A lot of these hospital workers making such claims have been proven to be lying and fired. Not a great idea to accuse your employer of refusing necessary equipment for social media clout.

Devils Advocate: At this point, do doctors need to speak out on it? It is well known.

No one is forcing the doctors to come to work.

Companies should be able to fire employees for making comments that management doesn’t approve regarding their job.

They should speak anonymously about it but we all know this is really about individual attention.

I'd almost certainly be fired the instant my boss saw me talking to a reporter about our business. It's in our handbooks that all such matters be directed to HR.

What's the difference?

They can talk all they want and they might be protected by whistleblower laws if the situation warrants, but why do they think they don't have to play by the rules of their employer? If they want to talk to reporters about their business, then maybe they should've started their own practice. Otherwise, they risk termination.
