Raised in the same home. Access to the same education. Raised in the same way regarding rules, discipline, love, work ethic. Exposed to the same pleasures like vacations, arts, culture (Not specifically THAT culture), sports, activities etc.

But turned out COMPLETELY different.

My sister is a screaming, hardcore leftist, progressive, baby killing, atheist democrat.

I am none of those. I will say that as a boy, I got a lot of influence from dad while she tended to try to hide behind mom. When I screwed up, I was expected to fix it. When she screwed up, mom made excuses. It caused a lot of anger and fighting in our house growing up tbh.

All in all, I think people that were raised in the same house by the same people can have very different upbringings.

I'm an only child so no first hand experience, but thinking abotu people I know I think this is the case for A LOT of them.

Example 1
Older brother- childhood frickup, legal troulbles, marines, construction
Younger sister- straight arrow, doctorate

Exmaple 2
Older bro- disciplined strictly. High expectations. Well educated, high paying white collar job
Younger bro- hippie-ish. Long hair, not as disciplined, works in a co-op, plays in a band

Example 3 - Twins
Bro- decades long drug user. hard partier. free spirit, single (almost 40), moved across teh country
Sis- straight arrow. barely left hometown. Settled down with HS sweetheart and had kids immediately

Etc etc

Me.. my sister is the black sheep. 2 years younger than me, went to LSU and graduated with marketing degree. Makes the same and given the same opportunities in life, including college being paid for.

After she graduated all hell broke loose

Sister is now a drug addict, compulsive liar with a growing case of mental illness and loads of terrible (criminal) decisions … has stolen family jewelry and other things that she pawned for drug money. It’s very sad, she was beautiful in her prime (no pics)

Pretty much has been disowned by my folks and is blocked from all family events and gatherings

same with my 2 sons that are about 2-1/2 years apart.
polar opposites of each other.

one can't multiply 1x3 without a calculator, but can read an entire encyclopedia in one sitting.
other can't read an entire Dr Seuss book but can do Algebra in his head.

*obviously exaggerating a bit, but that's how different they are*

I have 2 brothers and its a weird scale.

Older brother (3 years older than me) - very introverted and kind of an a-hole

Me - a little introverted, a little outgoing, can be an a-hole but try to be nice

Younger brother (6 years younger than me) - extremely extroverted, very social and one of the nicest people that you will ever meet

Yes. I’ll add from my youngest to oldest is a 20 year spread. I am not the same person over that window so they experienced different dads is you get what I mean.

There was a set of male twins in the small town where I grew up. One turned out gay and the other ended up a career criminal.

3 kids catholic education. 13 yrs.

2 don't go to church at all. 1 didn't baptize her kids. Both raised conservative and are now die hard dems.

The only boy is conservative to this day and is raising his family as God intended.

My brother and I are one year apart.

He has a master's in engineering and then went to UVA Law and is now a patent attorney in the DC area.

I dont have a single college credit and I was in the Army for over 20 years as an Abrams tank crewmember. Everyone in the Army called us Dumb arse Tankers, but we had fun.

EtA-- Im on my 3rd and final marriage. Hes never married and no kids.
We've lived very different lives, but we're still very close.

My brother and I are and have always been total opposites. I'm short/stocky, he's tall/lanky, I listen to country music, he listens to heavy metal, I always gravitated towards alcohol, he towards pills/illicit drugs. It was hell sharing a room with him growing up. We're still not super close today, but closer than we were growing up.

my sister is 3.5 years younger than me but we do not really have a relationship anymore. she graduated from bama in 2014 and moved to atlanta shortly after. she and my BIL do very well for themselves, both in 6 figure jobs. something went off in my sisters head to where she acts like shes too good for everything and everybody. she doesnt answer text messages with any regularity but will update social media via stories, she hasnt told our mom she loved her in 5 years, and what really hurts is the fact I have a 7 week old baby and she did not even send me a text message of any sort of congrats after she was born. Throw in the fact that she hasnt even attempted to come meet her. i sent her pictures of her niece every day for a week to try and test her a little and she never responded to one of them. its really sad actually because we used to be close. she really is the worst type of person in every way and actually feel bad for my BIL. I think she has an undiagnosed personality disorder but thats neither here nor there.

My brother and I are pretty different, but it’s not like he’s a criminal, drug addict, etc… like other examples in this thread.

He’s 4 years older than me, just got married a couple years ago, will never have kids, has an associates degree, and works a blue collar job (he makes good money though).

I’ve been married for 12+ years, have 2 kids, 2 degrees, and work in a white collar field.
