We were having a crawfish boil at the house and my son asked could I move the vehicles so he and his buddies could shoot some hoops. I jumped in my vehicle, started it, and backed over our 14 year old half blind and deaf dog. I flattened our 4 pound dog like a pancake. No one knew the dog had gotten out of the house. It was awful. I still feel bad about it to this day despite the fact I know it was an accident. Can’t say I’ve ever hit a dog driving down the road though.
That’s tough.
Some dogs/animals seem very wary of vehicles
Some not so much
Vehicles are this mechanical creation that I think is hard for animals to prepare for in terms of sudden movements etc meaning it’s not part of the natural world.

My dd tonight came within inches of accidentally running over a mut. Other friend who grew up in the country tells me all the time about his dad basically saying to throw puppies into the bayou when he was growing up.

I grew up in the country and there was a lot of angry dogs.
When I drove, sometimes it was like I was piloting a vacuum cleaner. Those frickers were like squirrels diving under my tires. I think they actually inspired that dumbass Darwin Award winner from the Tiananmen Square protests.

It was awful. Words can’t describe how bad I felt.

I hit a dog once with my back tire. Pretty sure it was a pack of wild dogs. First few made it in front of me to otherside, the straggler was hit pretty good by me. Guts were spewn the road.

Yes. A German Shepherd was sitting on the other side of the ditch was I was traveling 55 mph. As soon as I got close he jumped the ditch and ran out in front of my truck. Like suicide. I felt bad but I didn't expect it.

Yep going down a gravel road about 30 mph just cruising middle of the day, came up to this house and the dog ran from the house across the road, and I couldn’t stop fast enough and ran over it and killed it. I looked back and noticed there was some kids in the yard that saw it happened my heart sank to my stomach. I helped their dad bury the dog in a field behind their house. Even though it was a complete accident I still felt horrible.

I had one legit commit suicide once. It was on the shoulder coming up on a four-way stop, far enough away from it to where I was already slowing down, but still going 45-50. It was just after dark, so I didn't see it too early, but I remember seeing it look back at me in the car, look across the road, and then, at the last second, step out in front of me and stop. BAM! There was no chance to avoid it.
I was in my Mom's white 1999 Chevy Malibu. I/we didn't think it did any real damage until a few days later it started overheating. The bumper hit it, and it rolled straight under the car. I don't think any tires ever hit it, but it did push the radiator back at the bottom and somehow managed to kink the hose just enough to cause a problem.
I never did convince my parents that the damn dog committed suicide and it was unavoidable.

Hit a small dog with the crank on my bike. It was going after my ankle. I was road race training doing 20+ mph. Happen really fast.
In the truck I’ve hit:
Buzzards
Owl (at night, popped out of no where)
Doves
Deer
Rabbits
Squirrels
Raccoons
Possums
Snakes
Skunks
Turtle
Specklebelly goose near Welsh
Wild hog hit me
Close calls with dogs, cats, flock of turkeys, and a cow elk. Snakes were the only intentional hits.
While stopped at an intersection, I saw an old yellow lab walk past my car and into the path of an 18 wheeler. That image of 9 tires flattening that poor dog still haunts me. I could see it happening but felt helpless to stop it.

Yeah, 70s and 80s were peak times for dogs especially. My dad had a moonlighting gig hauling cattle to the stockyard. We would be running across SELA moving herds, and the darn dogs were relentless out there at night.
Actually watched as my childhood dog, Bobbie, ran straight into the roadway and got killed. We had been working on the other side of the road, and for some reason we walked back across. Looked up a few minutes later and saw Bobbie scampering towards me before the driver could do anything. That sucked.
In my own driving, I've hit a few dogs. Not that many--to your point it seems like there are fewer ones out there these days. Otherwise, I've taken out my share of coons, possums, deer for days, and even a bobcat which I just nicked--saw him running off. Last two I remember was an early, foggy morning and a whole pack of dogs came running right in front of me. Not sure how many survived. A few weeks later I'm driving that same stretch of road, and four deer popped out of the woods and planted themselves in my work truck's path. It was close to midnight, so I couldn't see the aftermath, but the sound was awful.

I left my GFs house one night and a couple of blocks away, a cat darted out unexpectedly and my car lifted like I ran over a sack of potatoes.
I stopped, looked in the rear view mirror, and saw the cat flipping & writhing like it was being tortured. I felt sick to my stomach. It was a one-way street, so I went arround the block, came back and the cat was nowhere to be found.
I've convinced myself the cat survived to ease my guilty conscious.

As to the op question: I am old so yeah, I have run over a few. The 1st was worrisome when I was 16. Was driving a new tinfoil Toyota about 50 with traffic on my butt and a golden retriever came from right to left. Heard thump and then the bump bump of it going under the right wheels. Circled back around to check on it but it had run off. Still hoping that car was light enough the dog was just bruised/beaten.
Rest of the ones I don’t care, they were pos breeds little crumb gobblers.

Almost happened to me. I was driving in West Virginia hill country up a hill and a deer jumps on the road and just pauses (Deer in the headlights) I swerve to the right as he jumps last seconds to other side of road. Almost ran off the road.
It was a rent-a-car for a work trip where we were all staying in a lodge. I didn't tell anyone I was taking one of the rental cars to the gas station to get tobacco late at night. I don't know if company would've got pissed or not and how insurance would work if I did wreck.

I have and there was nothing I could do. Both front and back went over it and it was a small dog under 10 pounds. I still remember it like it was yesterday

my dad must have killed about 5 dogs that I remember.
at least this many if not more. I live outside the city limits where some people just let their dogs run loose. Although it is not as common as when I was younger. Also I should put it as the dog run into me. I have never actually ran over a dog. It always because the dumb pooch decided to play chicken and lost before I saw him and could avoid him. Just in the last few years I have ran over and killed 2 of my next door neighbors dogs. He lives behind a fence and leaves his gate open and his dogs like laying in his neighbors yard across the street. Dumb things will dart back and forth a lot of times when they hear a car coming, sometimes they lose.

Yes, while towing a boat. Little yapping dog thought it would charge out and run behind the truck. It didn’t account for the boat trailer.

Once, no avoiding it at night on dark road. Was a rather large dog. I pulled over to check and it was still alive but then someone finished it off. Terrible feeling.
Have also hit possum, coon, squirrel, rabbit. Almost hit deer, skunk and coyote

I've hit a couple of deer, a possum, and a suicide bunny ran under my left front wheel one time.
