Back in the 70s/80s I swear my dad must have killed about 5 dogs that I remember.

Dogs must have gravitated towards being under his moving vehicles. Anyway I can say I never have.

Mind you growing up in Louisiana back then there were strays all over

Nah, just an armadillo. Sounded like I hit an elaborate lego set.

That’s not gravity. That’s Jack Daniel’s.

No, but backed over a cat on two occasions (not the same cat). My cats too so I wasn’t happy. It’s never fun to run over someone’s pet.

I can think of two occasions he ran over our dogs
One I saw happen in real time. Ughh

The other time I came home from school and he said the garage door fell down on him. At the time I was like “oh no!!”

Later I realized that he had run him over and concocted some silly story about how he died

2 times a former club coach of mine died swerving to miss a dog. He was an on duty cop responding to call, in the rain... happened like 10 days before his wedding. Lost control and found a tree. At 18 I made a deliberate choice to never swerve for an animal that isn't likely to severely injure me because of that. I'll brake as hard and safely as possible, but that's all I got.

My dad started teaching me to drive when I was 10 years old. One of the first things he taught me was to never ever swerve to keep from hitting an animal. It's either the animal's life or yours. You choose you.

We were having a crawfish boil at the house and my son asked could I move the vehicles so he and his buddies could shoot some hoops. I jumped in my vehicle, started it, and backed over our 14 year old half blind and deaf dog. I flattened our 4 pound dog like a pancake. No one knew the dog had gotten out of the house. It was awful. I still feel bad about it to this day despite the fact I know it was an accident. Can’t say I’ve ever hit a dog driving down the road though.
