The grandfather of a toddler who fell to her death on a cruise ship in July has been charged with negligent homicide in her death, Puerto Rican authorities said. Salvatore "Sal" Anello was playing with the girl, Chloe Wiegand, on the 11th floor near a window while the ship was docked in Puerto Rico. An attorney for the Indiana family has said Anello sat the girl on rails near the open window, thinking it was closed. Prosecutors allege that Anello "negligently exposed [his granddaughter] through one of the windows," according to a statement from the Puerto Rican Department of Justice.

quote:

Chloe's parents blamed the cruise line company, Royal Caribbean, after the accident, saying the window shouldn't have been open. The criminal charges are "pouring salt on the open wounds of this grieving family," said Michael Winkleman, an attorney representing the family in a civil suit he's preparing against Royal Caribbean.

quote:

The details of the toddler's death have been disputed since the accident. Port Authority officials said Anello sat the girl in the window and lost his balance, and the girl fell to her death. Winkleman, however, told media that the toddler loved glass and windows, and her grandfather had placed her on a ledge by a glass wall, but had no idea one window within the wall was open.

Even after the time has passed since this happened, I still don't know what should be done.
Terrible all the way around.

Unless there are aggravating facts, I don't see the point of making a criminal case out of a tragedy like this. What is the point?

Ugh, I could have gone on having never heard this horrible story.

I guess I don’t think he should have been charged. His life is already ruined.

I saw that earlier...not sure why they felt the need to file criminal charges against him.

The family blames the cruise line and wants money.

The state, likely at the behest of the cruise line, blames the grandfather and wants him charged.

I wonder if he would have been charged if the family didn’t go after the cruise line with the civil suit.

Dude is never gonna pick up his granddaughter again. I feel like that’s enough in this case

My only legal guess is that if they can find him "guilty" of manslaughter, his civil case against the cruise ship company very likely would get thrown out. So, my guess is that Royal Caribbean is behind this in some way.

He’s already serving a self imposed life sentence. No coming back from that one.

That man’s liberty is being used as a pawn to save money for a big player. Disgusting.

Clearly, Royal Caribbean is pressuring Puerto Rican officials. The families attorney needs to take this very loudly to the press and expose this bullshite. Maybe the bad publicity would convince Royal Caribbean to do what is right.

Stories like this bring a tear to my eye, as they remind me that Clapton’s schmaltzy “Tears In Heaven” stole the Grammy from Bono’s incredible “One” due to the sympathy vote.

sounds like he was at fault, and if he isnt charged the cruise line is up against a mega lawsuit.

I wouldnt want to be the officer that puts grandpa in cuffs, that is for sure.
