He definitely knew it was open.
That room has hundreds of windows, and yet he magically picked the open one to set the baby on the rail? Come on.
The bottom row of windows there doesn't open.

Looks to me like everyone of the 2nd row of windows are closed? Maybe he didn't pay too much attention. Sad situation all around.

Nah. I'd rather fall off a cruise ship 100x than be that negligent homicide defendant.
This is a reminder to never let your mind wander. Always be aware of your surroundings. If I were in charge of safety somewhere, grandpa there would get a big, fat, unpleasant slide in my presentation.

It is not always obvious if a glass window/door is open or closed. I have multiple times reached for my glass door only to realize it is closed. It is why some people put a sticker on it

i say leave the poor guy alone. Was an accident and the fact that he has to live with it is punishment enough.
Cruise line not at fault though, family shouldn't be suing.

As the grand dad of a little girl who just turned a year old I cannot imagine what this man is going through. I’m not sure that I wouldn’t off myself if I thought I was responsible for my grand daughter’s death. This story has bothered me since I first heard it.

Dude is never gonna pick up his granddaughter again. I feel like that’s enough in this case
It wasn't enough for her parents. So the police and cruise line are making them suffer.

The family blames the cruise line and wants money.
The state, likely at the behest of the cruise line, blames the grandfather and wants him charged.
I wonder if he would have been charged if the family didn’t go after the cruise line with the civil suit.
Ding. Ding. Ding.
Cruise line wants to prove they weren’t the ones negligent and limit liability to family.

As a grandfather, I feel terrible for this man but.....This should never have never happened, I have been on over 20 cruises and by those windows, many times.
It is very obvious when they are open, putting a child on that ledge was a very bad mistake

'm surprised this guy hasn't offed himself yet
Doesn't surprise me.
Suicidal people have alot of self blame, usually undeserved and irrational self blame.
Judging by the lawsuit, I'm not sure he blames himself.

Yes, the old man was criminally negligent

Are we sure this guy thought the window was closed?
That seems ridiculous.

Me, too.
I am trying to think of what he may have been thinking; did he have a few cocktails beforehand, was there no wind/breeze, etc?
Then, for the family to almost immediately file suit...
That alone made it tough for the cruise line not press to have charges filed, if they did.

frick Royal Caribbean and their blatant corruption.
Pressuring a third world banana republic to help them save money by indciting a grandfather who's already devastated beyond belief and is already serving a self imposed life sentence.

Maybe the bad publicity would convince Royal Caribbean to do what is right.
What the hell would that be? What kind of an imbecile places a toddler near an open window 11 floors high? What kind of moron cannot tell that the window is open?
Negligent? Yes. Criminal? Nah. Throw out the lawsuit. Drop the charges. Move on.
