Gotta put my dog down I’m a wreck

Like the title says. I can’t let her suffer anymore with her severe hip arthritis. I’m a wreck and not cried like thus since dad passed away. How did you guys deal with this? I’ve had this old girl through thick and thin and thus feels like a gut shot.

It’s better to do it a month too early than a day too late. It’s the last kind thing you can do for her after all she’s given you. It absolutely sucks, but dogs have a way of telling us that it’s their time and they can no longer happily serve us, I think you know the answer as hard as it is.
Last year I had the vet come to my house and do it right here in her room in her comfy bed and I held her and said goodbye to her like that. It was a very hard day, but I knew it was the right thing. Hate it for you, cheers.

Man, im sorry to hear that. It's a brutal pain that I've unfortunately been through twice. As far as the process itself of putting them down, I've been with both dogs and held them right up until the end. I'd never leave them to have to die alone and I don't regret for a second staying in the room with them. The weeks and months after are going to be really difficult, I won't lie to you. As time goes by, I found myself able to laugh and smile at their memories more than cry but it's brutal at first. Seeing their kennels and leashes made me break down for weeks after but it does ease up. Face it head on and get help if you need it but there will be a brighter day ahead.
I believe that animals are going to be on the other side based on what I read in God's word and I believe that God loves our animals even more than we do. He gives us the blessing of stewarding them for a little while here and it's my duty to do the best job of that while I can and that includes giving them a graceful death. One day though, I believe we'll see our pets again and they won't have hip or joint pain, they won't be scared or sad. The best is truly ahead. God bless ya.

Dogs are selfless and do everything they can for you. This is one of those times when it is your turn to be selfless. It sucks but it is what's best for them.

My dog was a pain in the arse and he and I had a love/hate relationship for years. When it came time to put him down, I went to the vet by myself because my wife and kids didn’t want to go. I got home and just broke down when I started telling them how peaceful it was for him. It surprised me and didn’t realize how much I loved that little fricker.
This sucks, but you’ll pull through.

In February, late on a Sunday night, our little girl dog started acting strange and was hallucinating. She had a heart issue and we knew it would not be long, but we were not prepared for this. Right before midnight I called the closest emergency vet, told the kids we were leaving, and loaded up the dog with my wife holding her. We didn't get out of the driveway and she died in my wife's arms. She looked at me and said, I think she just died. So, I threw it in park and ran to the other side of the truck and she had, in fact, died. It was terrible. I went ahead and drove to the vet and they took her in for cremation. I do not envy you and godspeed.

I feel for the OP, but this is nonsense.

My best friend of 12 years got freaking Cushing's Disease real bad, he swelled up, went blind, his mind was gone and he was hurting all over. It's a terrible disease.
I put him in the truck twice and tried to go "do it" but couldn't, both times I came home torn up with him.
Finally I gave him the pain rx from the vet (3 x what was recommended) , wrapped him in a blanket and he died at home by my side.
It's a terrible part of being a dog owner, they just don't live long enough.

We are going through the same thing, hip arthritis, and are having the same conversations about the end.
I’m actually prepared, but don’t know at what point do we decide when our last day together will be. Could you please share some specifics on what’s happening suffering-wise, and how did you make the final decision? It would help me out a lot. Thanks.

Been there. I’m so sorry. It is the most selfless act of love we can give after all they’ve done for us. One day too early is better than 1 day too late. I’ve done the former bc of my selfishness Never again.
Give her a day of all of her fav things, even if it’s just sitting in the sun or stretched out on the sofa with you, and don’t forget chocolate. All dogs should taste chocolate right before crossing the rainbow bridge. We are here if you need to talk.

Take comfort and peace the best you can by knowing you are doing the right thing. Give her a easy hug, tell her what and why you are having to put her to sleep and I bet she will look you in the eyes with a 'it's okay' look. Hopefully you have a vet that is compassionate and has experience doing this uncomfortable task.

I’m sorry.
The only way through it is through it and it sucks.
You and your pal are in my thoughts today. ((hugs))

I am sorry to hear that. What kind of dog?

This is why we grew up reading Old Yeller. Be a man. Be sad. Cry. Do whatever. It's life and part of being a man.

went through this June 1. Still not over it at all. I tear up, at least, every day. it gets "better" but i really don't think it ever goes away. too many memories, habits, reminders and i get triggered at unexpected times. I feel your pain. mourning is just a continuous rewrite of your love.

Sorry to hear that, just put my bud down last month. It’s hard, but like was said, better too early than too late. Sorry for you and your family, losing a close pet hurts like hell.
