I have gone through this a couple of times in my life and in retrospect, every single time, I waited too long to do it. I am hesitant to get dogs anymore, because I don’t want to go through that every ten years or so.

I went through this in March with our beagle, Charlie.
Someone on here gave me the best advice going forward. I was feeling all the guilt and sadness of having to have Charlie put to sleep.
He said, "It's not about you."
That helped a heck of a lot.

That is really sound advice. As someone who once waited too long while my female shepherd with cancer soldiered on just to please me, I was wrong, and my 12 year old kind soul deserved better.
When the time comes, as it will for all of us, you have to be strong for them and those around you.
If you're Catholic take the dog's collar and carry it to Mass everyday until you can deal with it two weeks later. It is cathartic if you just push through.

Man - I'm very sorry - I am dreading the day that I have to do it to my current dog - i had to put one down about 10 years ago - it was horrible - the only comfort i could find was knowing that I loved that dog and she had a great life - and she knew it

We unfortunately lost our sweet buy weim about a month ago. he was only 5 and it was sudden. That pain cuts deep and you never realize how intertwined they are with you until they are gone. i still find myself looking for him, or going to call for him or listen to his response to things (doorbell, cards, notifications). Ive have lost 2 now and they both sucked. The only positive side is I didn't have to make the decision as they both passed just as we pulled into the vet. I don't know how I could do that and i will say a prayer for you

Sorry that you’re going through this. I never realized how much it sucked until I had to do it. Wait about a week and get a new puppy.

Thank you, I got her laying by me and getting ready for the vet shortly. Pain cuts deep, that’s for sure. Losing my parents was rough but damn if this don’t hurt bad

It does and the only thing that can help take the edge off is prayer. You are doing what is best for her...you will see her again in heaven. Every pet that passes leaves a little empty spot in our heart that is never filled in the same way but as time goes by it hurts a little less. You are in my prayers.
After I lost the last one I never wanted to have a pet again. My farmer friend told me that if you can't take their loss it's best not to have one.
The same day he died, his adopted kitty who he brought home from out of the woods weeks before took up residence on our back porch and refused to leave. I wasn't about to let her in the house knowing she was feral but it was winter and I went ahead and fed her and when it became really bitter cold, let her in. She immediately searched the house thinking he was in here somewhere and when she couldn't find him she layed on his bed...stretched out and just looked at me...it's like she understood that he was gone and not comingback. She's been here ever since.

That’s where I’m at. As I’ve gotten older, it’s harder to handle that grief. Losing human family is God awful as it is

You have a tender heart. I can't stand watching them suffer and have had to make that decision before. It is a great loss but there is another waiting for love and a good life with you out there somewhere. Don't hurry but leave the metaphorical door open for another to enter your life...it's worth it.

It sucks, and is a horrible experience.
Prayers for ya. Eventually, you can find a new buddy to fill the loss, not replace, but fill the loss you will have with other pet being gone.
