Well you can apply for jobs from a boat while you're fishing. Go and enjoy some outdoor activities while searching for a new job.

A long time ago I was a well logger for Schlumberger. The rig count in the Gulf dropped very low in the early 80's, work dried up, and I was let go. I thought at the time that it was a horrible, but I ended up in Silicon Valley, and it became the best thing that ever happened to me. I would have never made that move without the forced exit.

They could have done you the biggest favor ever, giving you the chance to set up your own business. Maybe find a partner in what you and he does best and form a new company to utilize those contacts you have from the past. Good luck.

Got laid off with an 8 month pregnant wife once (not comparing) ended up being the best thing that ever happened to my career.

It all works out man! Enjoy some day beers for a few days then get back on the horse.

If I had spare time, besides looking for your next job, I would learn details of Claude code and become an expert. It seems to be more about how to ask the right question or prompt.
Maybe side or second career

I’m getting ready to retire from one job. I want the transition to be seem-less as possible. I’ll be in the job market for the first time in 30 years. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about what’s available. The only thing I have going for me is I’m will to do almost anything reasonable. My expectations are low. I hope you find something soon. As I pray for me I’ll send some up for you VolsHarambe.

Become a unemployed social media influencer like everyone else. Start filming yourself playing golf and eating and trying on clothes. People will just start paying you money.

Read, what color is your parachute.

I read this when I was desperately searching for a job post-graduation. The recommendation to send a hand-written thank you letter to the employer is a really good one, as it helps you stand out from the competition (plus, nowadays, the hand written aspect helps to rule out AI involvement). That book had some other good stuff in it, but half of the advice was kind of tarded. Still very much worth a read since it's pretty short.
