City Council just passed new laws to crack down hard on short-term rentals, especially in residential neighborhoods. The new rules take effect July 1. I wouldn't book any stay after June in an VRBO/Airbnb unless its in a commercial building and/or downtown. Even if the unit is "legal" now it might not be this summer.

Already bad advice. LOL

And OP, August is probably the worst time to visit Nola. I would consider another month if at all possible when it’s a little cooler and more outdoor stuff is happening

I know it will be hot as F..K but we are doing a cross country drive and need to be in Florida around the 16th. I am now thinking a hotel with a nice pool.

Garden District …. Broadmoor

Not enough information in either case. Some areas are safer and nicer than others for both locations.

Is the Broadmoor location East or West of Napoleon? North or South of Fountainbleau?

Garden District is harder to blockify. Generally you want south of St. Charles, north of Magazine, and west of Jackson.

Make sure you get a good bullet-proof vest (bonus points if it's stab-proof as well).

Get a tattoo of your name, SSN and home address on your inner bicep so there's no question in ID'ing you.

Steal a car before you go there, drive THAT instead of your own vehicle. When it gets broken into, you've literally lost nothing.

Godspeed.

It's been a few years, but I would either stay at the Marriott on Canal, JW on Canal or Renaissance in the Warehouse District when I would travel down there. Some on my team liked to stay at The Saint or the Ritz, but it was an old dumpy one IIRC.

News Orleans is great! Hang out in the quarter. Maybe go to City Park in the evening when it cools down.

Mandinas is a great place to eat with a parking lot. Katie’s is as well, parking on the street.

In the quarter: Mr B’s, Bourbon House, Brennan’s are great. GW Finns is great but only if you want fish as most of the menu is fish. More casual: Court of 2 Sisters, Felix’s, Acme (not too great but fine), Dragos charbroiled oysters are the best but the rest of the food is meh.

The city can be dangerous but it can be safe as well. Watch your surroundings. In the quarter at night is when most incidents occur.

The kids may like Mardi Gras world. WW2 Museum is phenomenal but costly and a lot of standing and walking.

Magazine Street can be fun for a couple of hours. Drive down the road and park when you see a store you may like. Women enjoy the shopping.

Greetings...Will be headed to New Orleans with my family in August.

Just shoot dead the first person you see in the city. That will set the tone and the others won’t mess with you.

Picked a terrible fricking time. Its hot and crime is higher because the fricking juveniles aint got shite to do.

And honestly after living there for so long, just avoid the tourist trap shite. Thats the cheesiest part of new orleans with the grossest people.

Eat good and stay at a nice hotel. Venture out during the day and stay close to your hotel at night. It’s a little sketchy at times, but can be a great time. Wouldn’t recommend getting belligerent and walking around at 3 am alone, trying to find your way back to your hotel

I’ve done this before and survived fortunately - but won’t do it anymore

Yeah, the weather sucks especially if you're coming from the Bay area. By August we're used to the oppressive heat and actually enjoy more stuff around town than we do in July.

There are some advantages - Our anniversary is in August and there are always dining specials to be had during Coolinary month. Antoine's usually does a lunch special with price tied to the year (2 or 3 courses for $23 for example). Restaurants make their money during convention season, which ain't summer, when they just try to cover most of their costs and survive till fall. Our favorites include GW Fins, Peche and Gianna.

Summer also brings hotel specials. Though we live here, a couple times we've done a long weekend in the quarter and got fat, dumb and happy for a few days, taking in great food and music, and taking the streetcar uptown once we've had our fill of the Quarter, Frenchmen St. and Warehouse District. There used to be a few places with 25 cent martinis at lunch in the summer.

White Linen Night and Dirty Linen Night (weekend after) can be fun.

Satchmo Summer Fest has food and music. Red Dress Run is more of a French Quarter pub crawl that blends into dirty linen night later that night, for those able to last that long.

There is no way in hell I would drive my own car in the city. Stay downtown. Walk, cab, or Uber if want to go anywhere.

One of my buds came in and stayed at the shell building. It was cool with a rooftop pool overlooking the state palace and Saenger theater
