The real decline was the period before targeting, where cerebro-spinal injuries really threatened the game. There are as many kids playing football today in High School as there were in 1975-- and this is an era with a lot fewer kids overall.
Do you see what you did?
If there are as many playing today as yesteryear, and we have with a greater population now, then it's an overall net decline in participation.
The decrease in interest to me parallels the formation of gigantic high-schools. There's simply far fewer slots than there use to be. It's a supply and demand issue. In my little school those who were pretty good could play in all three major sports and run track if better than most. And I'm guessing participation drives enhances life long interest.
IE: I'm thinking a major reason is the ratio of spectators to players because of these behemoths of socialization.

One other thing that you didn't add is that the last 20 years or so that I've been following NFL draft talk, each year you hear more and more, this draft is low on QB, this draft is low on Tackles, this draft is low on cornerbacks. NFL draft seems to be trending down the last few years in quality and quantity . Indiana just won the NCAA for petes sake and Ole MIss and Oregon was in the final 4.
What I think you'll see that will turn off a lot of people is a major gambling scandal or a year long strike. Running out people like Bad Rabbit for the superbowl show who don't even speak english doesn't help. Like heavy weight boxing eventually it will fade away and be a shell of what it is now and I think it happens in the next 25 years.

. Pro and college. It is generating a lot of money, so that will keep it going a while. But the actual sport is becoming garbage.
Unlimited transfers have killed college for me (who plays where, for how long, and will they transfer next year, me no give a shite), but this will solidify the NFL. EPL took the front seat for me a few years ago, and the post Burrow era at LSU poured diesel on that fire.
White women will always hem and haw about CTE and injuries, but they also tend to do whatever their Braydyn wants, so he's going to play if he wants to.

I might suggest that the decline in interest in horse racing is directly tied to the rise in casinos in almost every state. Casinos and on line gambling make it easier to bet money.
Florida has Jai Lai (however it's spelled) and our main Florida friend loved to go and bet on the game. But in his last days he took several tens of thousands to Las Vegas, went to all the shows, bet wildly, and won so much that he stayed a second week. Then he went back to Florida where cancer was waiting for him.

That will be someone else's problem

Low income people will play as long as it’s legal.
Yup. The majority of these stars being paid handsomely by college boosters are not destined for law school or big business. They are cashing in on what they bring to the table, elite athletic ability. That’s fine. Strike while the iron is hot. The generational wealth opportunity cannot be passed down. Considering low income areas are not seeing a decline in birth rates, there will continue to be kids wanting to play ball.

As soon as AI starts designing plays and calling plays against the other team's AI, basically an AI vs AI chess match with human chess pieces, it's over. And I think that's only a few years away, beginning already.
I’m sure this is already happening. Plays are scripted. Analytics are killing the entertainment value in some sports.

For football to fade away something has to replace it. What’s going to replace it?

We all know the real reason football is losing popularity in this country
But we can't openly post about it for fear of the "Ban Hammer"
An entire post of wrong. Impressive.

He’s an injury attorney that would sue you if his kid got hurt on a tackle

There’s not a surety that you’re wrong but I disagree. The game will change and it may not look the same. There will always be detractors but the game continues to evolve and as long as people watch and pay, there will be willing participants.. the comparison with horses is stupid regardless. They don’t have true free will..

In the 1950s executives of the fledgling TV industry wished to partner with horse racing to produce weekly content. The racing powers that be rejected the proposal in fear it would hurt on track attendance. TV next turned to the still somewhat obscure NFL and the rest is history.

I couldn’t care less about college football now. Anyone who watches that trash must have a very low IQ.
Did your IQ change when you stopped watching?
I doubt anyone noticed other than being less fun at parties.

As a Husker fan, football has already been dead for over 20 years.
Give me something new.

At first I wasn’t a fan of Trump but watching him break people like you has been entertaining. I won’t lie it’s funny. Liberal melts are the best, lol.
