Two friends went here. Both returned their devices and both later went to:

Baton Rouge Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates
8080 Bluebonnet Blvd
(225) 769-2222

Both said night & day difference. One was assessed by Laurin and the other by Melissa - both said their testing at the clinic on Bluebonnet was far more thorough than the one on Oak Hills.

Both are very thrilled with the service and the results they are getting. The other benefit they like is that there are 5-6 ENT M.D.'s on staff in addition to 5-6 audiologists. (Apparently the place on Oak Hills is literally a one-person shop. She has a master's degree while the audiologists on Bluebonnet all have PhD's.)

Check in if you are now getting hearing aid ads after reading this post. It was unintentional. Guess Chicken has to make his advertisement money.

I was lucky enough to get mine paid for by the state's workforce development grant, but my doctor's brand was Phonak, and they were about $5K for a set, that included the ComPilot and a pen that you can sit on a table in a meeting and have it direct to your aids like a microphone.

If I were buying mine out of pocket, I would go to Costco or Sams and get their house brand. They are made by one of the major manufacturers, and are about 1/2 the price.

I’ve used hearing aids since I was 4. The ones I have now are getting kind of old. Anything new is too expensive for me.

A few months back, I stepped inside the soundproof kiosk at Sam’s Club. The audiologist gave me a free hearing test. I thought I heard everything clearly. Apparently, according to her reading the results, I didn’t.

I set a follow up appointment with her to try different pairs of hearing aids. The amplification was incredible, almost too much. I was almost set on buying a pair or at a minimum, trying a pair for a while.

I brought home the literature and read about them. The next day, I went to work and talked with a coworker about hearing loss. I asked her, do you find yourself repeating anything back to me? The answer was no. I then asked my friends and family. The answer was no.

My coworker suggested I reach out to an Audiologist that she knew. I did. I had a hearing exam. I shared with her what I had learned at Sam’s. She looked at the results and said “your hearing is fine.” You don’t need hearing aids.

So, I didn’t get hearing aids. I often think maybe I was trying to be “sold” something I didn’t need but at the same time, I would also like to think that Sam’s partnered only with reputable audiologists.

Who knows.

Which type of aid did you go with?

Coincidentally, both audiologists I went to recommended Oticon. It was the only brand the first place carried. Since that was the only brand I could get my insurance discount on, I went with it. The audiologist said the technology is evolving such that I would probably upgrade in 5 years. Another reason why I went with what both places recommended. Guess I will be replacing them about every time I upgrade my phone.

Hearing Aids have come a long way. My dad had several sets before he passed, and each new set was better than the old test.

Make sure you use an Audiologist. Also, ask them if they do “Real Ear”. They did this on my dad, and the good got better.

Good to HEAR that you are doing well.

I’m 61, have had them for 8 years. Wish I would have done it 15 years ago. Get um. You will be pleased. And as far as people thinking stuff. F-um.

Wreck,
I too have Oticons that I got in January. Can you tell me what phone you have? I have a 7plus and have had nothing but problems with the blue tooth. It's gotten better with the latest iOS updates but is still not like the trial set I had when I was fitted. I think I'm going to replace my phone and see if that helps the 7 runs v4.2 blue tooth and they have since switched to v5.0 in the newer phones.

My Oticon hearing aids are 10 years old. I'm getting new ones next year and can't wait to have an upgrade. I use an android phone so I'm not sure what apps/brand will work with that.

I can hear fine. I've had terrible eyesight for years, but the hearing is ok now.
I have an app, called Dog whistle, that plays a tone at different Hz. I still can hear up to 15kHz or more.
My kids, though, can still hear up to the 20kHz max.
Not sure about the accuracy of the app, I'm sure an audiologist would laugh at my using that app as a test

I think you have to use the ConnectClip from Oticon to connect them to a Android phone. I think that's what my audiologist told me. I'm almost tempted to get one just to use a mic instead of talking into the phone.

I have an iPhone 7. I’ve only had them a few days, so I can’t provide an incredible amount of insight. I’ve had one side cut out for a second or two while listening to music on occasion, but nothing major.

I wish you would tell this to my 73 year old uncle who I have to yell at on the phone. I usually just hang up and text him. His eyesight is fine.

I bought a pair through Sam's Club made by General Hearing Instruments (in Harahan) for about $600. My hearing is awful and these help. They amplify everything but they are pretty cheap.

I have a friend who is in the industry, and i can tell you that this is 100% true.. the Costco/Sams house brands are the exact same product as the major brands.
