Finally decided to get hearing aids

I put it off forever, kind of like when I finally broke down and bought a mini van when the kids were young. My hearing has been getting worse for a long time. Around 2013 all of a sudden all car stereos seemed to suck. Couldn’t figure out why the quality in newer stereos was so bad. Also noticed the left ear piece on my headphones had quit working very well. One day after getting frustrated over my cheap car stereo and broken headphones I decided, just for grins, to reverse my headphone ear pieces in my ears. That was when I suddenly realized it was me.
My upper frequency loss is severe, which explains why my wife thought I never listened to her. I can now show her medical proof, a chart to explain why I didn’t ignore her and not do something she claims she asked me to do. I’m 53 and don’t feel old, so felt self conscious taking the step to get hear aids. Figured my hearing chart excuse could only last so long. I also got tired of trying to guess what people were saying. I’d usually hear one thing and then would have to go through a list of stuff that rhymed with it until something made sense. Trying them out was like the first time I put on a pair of glasses and suddenly noticed that I could see individual leaves on trees. I went home and soon realized that the fluorescent lights in my kitchen apparently make a loud buzzing sound.
The technology in hearing aids has apparently improved a lot. I use to have people tell me that hearing aids didn’t help very much. It’s a big difference for me. It’s nice to actually hear quality music again. Using a Bluetooth, I can play music directly through them and answer the phone with them. Wouldn’t surprise me if I start hearing unsolicited commercials at some point. I’m probably being told who I should vote for at low volumes continuously. Hopefully not.
Anybody else on here make the step to using hearing aids?

I don't really see where the stigma is these days. It was there 25 years ago because so many old people had them, but I don't really think it's like that anymore.

I agree. Millennial hipsters have been using them ironically for years now.

How does hearing AIDS work? Like a dick in the ear? Or is it AIDS that hears?

Not sure, but I hear you have aids.

The way they are made now, it is pretty hard to tell when someone has them in. Both my father and brother have them and it is usually a few minutes before I notice if my brother has them in.

Had mine about a year now and like you didn't realize what I had lost till I wore them. Of course mine was high tones too, in one ear, low in the other, so I had great directional hearing. If I heard a noise I knew exactly where it came from. Now I hear stuff but may not be able to pinpoint location immediately.
One other thing, separation of sounds, like a party or restaurant. All the voices just kinda merge together instead of being him here, her there, that other over there.
I have "loop" but not bluetooth. Places with that installed bring the sound to the hearing aids like bluetooth but there's not a lot of places that built the copper wiring in. It's great when they do though. It's like the sports bar TV that is across the room. You can bring the sound to you instead of walking over to the TV.

Mine are damaged as well. My right is worse than my left, from years of loud music without ear protection (and fighting early on in life)
Also used to mix in headphones alot, and I would listen loudly at times for hours upon hours. I regret it, but don't know how bad it truly is because i do manage still. I found out the same way, i like to mix the drums how i play which is right handed. I put the headphones on wrong and realised i couldnt head the hats nearly as well.

I have hearing aids, but I work from home so I don't have to wear them much, but they are nice to have when you need them. The tech is great for pairing with a phone.

My Dad did after putting it off for years
He refuses to wear them which pisses my mom off on a daily basis

I wear ear protection to LSU games and any other loud environment. I dont see how anyone can stand it otherwise.

This is my biggest problem. I have good deal of hearing loss due to way too many concerts standing in front of speakers and loud stereos. Now, I can be two feet from someone in a crowded room and struggle to hear their voice individually. The number of times I have been in a restaurant for a business lunch and couldn't hear the person across the table is ridiculous. Eventually, I'll have to break down and go to an audiologist.

I am DESPERATELY trying to get my dad to get hearing aids. We are constantly repeating stories and trying to talk over the absolutely blaring television every time we go over there. It’s frickin irritating and I bet his coworkers can’t stand it.
