It must suck being an ignormaus.

European summers are getting brutally hot. So why is air conditioning so rare?
quote:

Europe has pledged to become “climate neutral” by 2050 and a sharp increase in air conditioners will make climate commitments even harder to reach.
quote:

The continent faces a dilemma: embrace energy-intensive air conditioning, with the negative climate impacts it brings, or find alternative ways to cope with its ever-hotter future.
quote:

the “so-called French elites” who encourage others to seek alternative cooling methods while they “obviously enjoy air-conditioned cars and offices.”
quote:

Using fossil fuel-powered AC increases planet-heating pollution, which in turn increases temperatures, fueling “a vicious cycle of worsening climate change,” said Radhika Khosla, an associate professor at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford.
quote:

The challenge will be making sure countries have strong regulations around the efficiency of cooling systems to reduce their potentially huge climate impact. “Because every air conditioner sold today locks in energy use and emissions for the next decade or two decades. So it’s important we get this right first time.”

Maybe now that he’s no longer destitute, coach O can reward you for your loyal ball slurping and bring you to France one day. Then you can look around and possibly notice some architectural differences in the structures of an old French village and the latest strip mall that was just built near Bluebonnet. Or you can keep reading CNN articles you fricking ponce.

These Mitsubishi style units are very popular on old Venetian style homes in the Adriatic area. I would say the French could have them easily as well.

That's really going to mess up their farm produce. High temps are more Mediterranean.
I remember one year Newcastle had done a massive renovation of an area and planted great gardens with lots of flowers. They relied on the summer rains to keep them watered and the plants started dieing of drought.
So the ran what seemed to be miles of hoses to try to keep the plants alive.
There were NO faucets anywhere in the gardens, because no one thought they'd be needed.

Seems like a stupid problem to have. Is Europe just larping as first world?

I agree…there is no reason to have that many deaths annually across the region. From what I have seen, most businesses and upscale homes have mini-split type units in them.

It's the same in Australia. However, window/wall units for at least the living room area have become more common now than what I remember 25 years ago. But central A/C and heat? With the cost of energy down there, the already insane electric bills would be off the charts. I'd imagine it is the same in Europe.

Many do, just not all. It's absolutely possible.

That's actually not a bad idea. I'm half joking when I ask whether their power grid could handle the extra demand for electricity if they had widespread implementation of AC units??

Heat gets all the press, but cold kills way more people.

I imagine in Europe a lot of those houses are also built to retain heat because of the weather a good majority of the year (thick brick and heavy insulation). It would likely cost a shite ton in order to cool them efficiently.

It's not like here in the South where houses are built to be able to keep cool (even ones that didn't have A/C).

My windows work like these below. It wouldn’t be a simple process to install a window unit. You mostly see split units over here.

Sounds like they need some common sense AC controls...

Also, 33C is only like 91 and if there's no humidity thats a nice summer day here..

For a subset of the European population they do not buy A/C units because of their environmental beliefs. That is absolutely true for some.

Another is the price of electricity is outrageous. When I left last year I was paying 33 cents per kwh & those units use a lot of it. They're so loud inside your house. They also have the 6" wide exhaust hose that you have to buy a skirt to go around the window.

I had three in my house and my neighbors thought I was crazy. Didn't care.

But also, and this is anecdotal, I knew MANY Germans who wouldn't turn on fans because they believed that even they used too much electricity. For the price, but again, the environment too.

July 2021 was all time record heat there. I ate dinner at multiple homes without “air con”. I sweat my arse off. They did not believe in fans either.

Window unit or some fans….

They're like $300

It's the power grid. Outside of high-end, dense areas the grid isn't built to handle the load of AC units on every house.

Everyone grew up with the flat wold map. It's easy to forget how far north Europe is compared to the United states.

For example
Gibraltar - at basically the southern tip of Spain, sit at roughly the same latitude as Nashville, TN and Las Vegas.

London - Calgary, Canada would be 35 miles south of London.

Rome would be 32 miles north of New York City.

My point is, we wouldn't be shaming Canadians for having to buy AC when they've never had to before.
