The current heatwave has gripped the country since the bank holiday weekend, when high pressure built over the UK and brought clear skies and rocketing temperatures.

The Met Office expects highs of 33C on Wednesday, 32C on Thursday, 30C on Friday and 29C on Saturday.

So the hot spell is forecast to linger into the weekend, with cooler conditions predicted to return next week when the heatwave finally breaks.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued Amber and Yellow heat-health alerts across England and warned the extreme conditions could cause a “rise in deaths”.

quote:

The Met Office said: “The start of the week will see the heatwave continue for much of England and Wales with temperatures well above average.

“Tuesday will be another very hot day, with a rapid rise in temperatures through the morning.

“A peak of 35C is again expected in London, the Home Counties and Cambridgeshire.

“More widely temperatures exceeding 30C will again be reached across eastern Wales, and eastern, southern and central England away from immediate coastal areas.“

More people die in Europe annually due to heat than are killed by guns in America

quote:

Heat-Related Deaths in Europe

Annual Toll: The World Health Organization estimates that extreme heat claims over 175000 lives annually across the wider European region.

The A/C Disparity: A major contributing factor is the lack of widespread air conditioning. Studies suggest that up to 80% of European households do not have air conditioning, leaving vulnerable, aging populations susceptible to increasingly frequent summer heatwaves.

Gun-Related Deaths in the U.S.

Annual Toll: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the U.S. sees roughly 46,000 to 48,000 gun-related deaths per year.

Per Capita Comparison: Because the U.S. has a smaller population than Europe, Europe's heat death rate (approx. 23.5 per 100,000) is higher than the U.S. firearm death rate (approx. 13.7 per 100,000).

Seems like a stupid problem to have. Is Europe just larping as first world?

I get that they don't need it too often, but why not buy a window unit for the occasional heat wave?

They're like $300.

Just the native British are dying, not the invading horde. Thus those in power do not care and are likely welcoming it.

When I did a study abroad in the UK, the student group I was with was from all over the South. We bought out all fans in about a 30 block radius from the college dorms we were staying at.

Came in handy about 3 weeks later when the heatwave came in.

A quick Google shows about 1,500 people just in England.

That means the other parts od the UK must account for 50k people.

Or he conflated Europe and the UK.

I believe that the OP misstated the numbers. In the article it said: "Annual Toll: The World Health Organization estimates that extreme heat claims over 175000 lives annually across the wider European region.", not 175,0000 deaths annually in UK.

It's not false

I posted stats from the CDC and the WHO

There's this too which doesn't account for the per capita which would mean heat related deatsh are lower PC due to population differences.

In 2023 there were about 47000 gun related deaths in the USA LINK

In the same year there were about 48000 heat related deaths in Europe LINK

No matter how you look at it, it's a stupid problem for Europe to have

I am sure it is either they have to pay for a "loicense" or they are not able to open their windows all the way due to "safety measures."

Right. The OP meant heatwave-related deaths across all of Europe, including the UK. Not just deaths in the UK.

Europe takes into account more than the UK though.

You seriously want us to believe that more than 44000 people die of heat related injuries, per year, in tUK alone?

Eta...sorry, you said Europe

They will never adopt AC because it uses too much energy for their taste.
