I would much rather give directly to someone who is genuinely in need, than give it to the government and let them decide who they think is in need.

i never give anything to someone who is panhandling. They are either scam artists or they are mentally ill and giving them money or food will not help them improve their situation.

I enjoy my volunteer work that I do (on a scheduled basis) through my local church 20 hours a month. We have strategic assistance that is designed to help others improve their situations.

I don’t want to give to eliminate some guilt but rather give to create positive growth in their lives.

I feel lots of inclination, dont always step up. I will throw a Second Harvest coupon up with the groceries at Rouse's. I am fairly certain that the money or food get to those in need.

I donate my time during the holidays with homeless shelters during Christmas and thanksgiving- it’s exhausting getting hit up while pumping gas or at a intersection

I don’t make enough to donate really, but if a guy comes up and asks for food then I’ll buy it. I don’t give cash though.

Like some baw came up and asked me for money outside of Panda Express the other day, I offered to buy him food and he told me to frick off.

I do the same thing. That guy was a scammer and probably makes more than some honest working people.

If they're legitimate poor people they're not going to turn down a free meal.

Dang, I thought this thread had fallen off the page by now.

I really enjoyed reading the replies. Especially those that pointed out the things other than or in addition to money that can help people - consoling a sad or lonely person, being there for someone in their moment of need and other acts like that.

Heck, I didn't think about it when I started the thread but if someone didn't think to donate his liver when he passed, I would be either dead or well on my way there right now. There's a lot of different ways to help.

I probably should do more than I do but I do try to help -mostly through church and other organizations. Like others, I am leery of people on the side of the road asking for help in most instances.

I'll give to legit charities and in certain situations to people that I know truly need it. I refuse to give to people standing on interstate exits or yelling at me in gas station parking lots. Those guys can get hit by a bus for all I care. Baton Rouge is overrun by those types. In fact, a few of them getting run over would make that city slightly less shitty.

I'm not an OT Baller, I can't give much to charity, etc. But I do feel the overwhelming want to help people. I know what it's like to be at rock bottom, and sometimes you just need someone, anyone to at least be there for you.

Two days ago this chick in a dress who was probably 30 but looked much older approached me at the gas station asking for money for two gallons of gas. You could tell she had done her best to dress up to make her story seem more legit but she had a horrible case of meth mouth. Huge red flag and I said I don’t carry cash. I’ve given before but I look for the signs of someone scamming or out for drug money. I’m Gen X so I’m a natural cynic.

I lived in Madison, MS from 2006-08. During that time, I donated to a Jackson shelte. Since 2008, I have bounced around and finally settled in NYC. To this day, it is the only charity I make an annual donation to. I don’t have a good reason why since I have ties to that area.

I work with a couple of shelters in Fort Worth. They are all in the same area, so essentially the truly(?) needy all congregate in the same place.

I'm likely wrong, but I feel like I can tell the difference between the meth heads and those truly down on their luck. When I encounter the latter, I'm usually inclined to assist, whether it's with a few bucks, a meal or a kind word/prayer.

Here they are, living on the street with what's left of their possessions; here I am,
blessed to be in a position to give while I drive away in my vehicle to my comfortable home with my intact family.

Maybe those few bucks will help them make it to a shelter that night, find their next meal (drink?) or make it to tomorrow.

I give what/when I can, but not at my own family's expense.

I do try to help. I do not hand out money to able bodied men. I will offer $ to the elderly or handicapped who are asking. I will offer food to anyone.

I like to help out but am also very skeptical of large “charity” organizations. I much prefer to give when I know it is going directly to those in need. At work we all throw in for presents that go directly to a family and are delivered by someone in our office. Also donated to a high school friend who was raising money for her family in Puerto Rico. I never give to panhandlers or the Red Cross.

Less fortunate? Who is less fortunate? Those with true disabilities, sure, I give to charities. Most of those considered less fortunate though have actively placed themselves in their station due to chronically poor choices.

Every year we buy Christmas presents for a few less fortunate kids. We also have our daughter gather up toys she doesn't play with anymore and have her personally hand them to another kid that doesn't have much. We hope it teaches her to appreciate what she has as well as teaches her to give.
ETA: We don't give shite to the parents. Kids can't help their situation and as big of an a-hole as I am that pulls on my heart strings. Adults on the other hand....

A guy in fatigues got mine with that story. Wanting to help a soldier I filled his tank.
Only later did I realize he had on Marine fatigues with USAF jacket.

Every now and then I see a poor person who looks like he could use some help. But when I'm tempted to ask my butler to give him a couple of dollars, I remember that he only carries $100 bills and the beggar probably can't make change. So I move on with life.
