im 38 and the older i get unfortunately im finding my sleep is suffering more and more.
every week or two ill have a night where i just stare at the ceiling and despite taking an advil PM or nyquil, it does nothing and im hungover the next day.
last night i feel asleep at 4am despite having a very relaxing stress free day and nowhere to be this morning.
it really is affecting my life and im wondering if prescription meds is an option. TIA.
nb4 jerkoff/sex, etc

Not until I hear about a sleep pill that actually gives you a good night's rest instead of forcing you to sleep.

The problem is sperm stuck in your prostrate. You need to stick your finger in your a-hole while you jerk off. You’ll be sleeping like a baby in no time.

I take an OTC. Works well and I don’t wake up feeling groggy

I have a prescribed med to take to help me sleep. I rarely take it, but when I find I've gone without solid sleep for several days I consider it. It works (and also helps on international flights).
Having said that, I recently started listening to Apple Music's 'sleep' playlist and that has surprisingly worked extremely well. I use ear buds, so you'd have to find something that doesn't aggravate your ears while laying down. AirPods work for me.

Did once. Woke up, the room was spinning, and my stuff was flying at me. Couldn't move. Didn't take it again

Ambien is the tits.
Not long term but for like 2-3 nights or so will help you normalize a sleeping pattern.
Be warned, hella weird side effects are likely like eating your whole pantry or just really bizarre behavior.

I took Ambien...once. I took it a half hour or so before bedtime and seemingly went to sleep as normal. Trouble is, I "woke up" around 3 AM sitting in my truck in the garage in nothing but my underwear with telephone in hand and about 20 calls to my ex girlfriend over the course of an hour or so. Never again!
I have since learned that if I get some exercise late in the day and also drink nothing with caffiene after lunch, I can do pretty well. A key for me has been to figure out how to keep my mind from racing as I am trying to get to sleep. I basically work through what I would call a meditation exercise that I came up with to clear/occupy my mind.
That said, if lack of sleep is fricking up your life, you have to do something and I would certainly try prescription sleep aids in that case.

I don’t blame you. Every time you go to sleep there’s a good chance you may never wake up

Ambien is for sure out of the question
im speaking more of the newer safer pills that include some with only a 30 minute half life for those who struggle with anxiety of going to sleep
i have valium but its only 2mg and it doesnt affect me.

My wife was prescribed ambien to help her sleep. She's scared to take a whole one because her dad had a bad reaction to it years ago. So she takes half and I take the other half. Sleep like a baby.

I take Trazedone. It really helps knock me out. It isnt a narcotic and not hard to wake up. Works for me.

Have you tried working out to release extra energy?
Also try taking about 400 to 600 mg of magnesium an hour before bed. This is the brand I like because it's magnesium glycinate (very absorbable and easy on stomach) and it's the highest amount per tablet I could find.
KAL Magnesium Glycinate 400
You should pray about too. Be like... "Hey, Father, it's me your favorite son, dallastiger55. If you can knock my arse out cold, I'd appreciate it. Amen"
